(161/250) The Polyphemus moth is a giant silk moth known for its large, brown wings and dramatic eyespots, resembling an owl's gaze. These moths have large wingspans measuring up to 6 inches and can be found across most of the country. Like other silk moths, adults don't eat - their goal is to reproduce.

🌟 Welcome to International Dark Sky Week! šŸŒ™ Over the next five days, we’ll be highlighting some of the best stargazing spots along the Ozark Trail, where you can experience some of the darkest skies in Missouri.

Missouri is home to some of the most remote and pristine areas for night sky viewing, and we’re excited to show you just how special these spots are.

šŸ” Today we’re kicking things off with this map of Missouri’s dark sky zones. As you can see, the Ozark Trail runs through some of the darkest areas of the Southeast region, where light pollution is minimal and the stars shine their brightest. 🌠

Stay tuned this week as we feature a different stargazing spot each day and share tips for making the most of your night sky adventures.

Let’s celebrate the beauty of the Ozark Trail under the stars! 🌌

Three hours later…⁣
⁣
Your heart is saying ā€œI could hike up these boulders for hours!ā€ (You know, the ones pioneers used to ride for miles?) However, your feet are saying, ā€œYou wore flip flops…why?ā€

Planning is an important step for any outdoor adventure. Before heading out, check the map, ask a ranger, or visit the park website or NPS app for the latest news, updates, and events.

But, NPS, is there a trip planning guide or something to get us started? Why yes! Thanks for asking. Check out our handy dandy guide at: https://www.nps.gov/subjects/healthandsafety/trip-planning-guide.htm

National Park Week is just around the corner! What's National Park Week? It's like a week for national parks.

Yes, this is happening. Now that we have that out of the way, runs from April 20 to April 28. Entrance fees will be waived on Saturday, April 20, to kick off the celebration and encourage everyone to enjoy their national parks in person. (You don't all have to go to Yellowstone. We love you Yellowstone.) With over 400 national park areas, there are parks closer than you think.

Throughout the week, parks, programs, and partners will host events and activities. Learn more at: https://www.nps.gov/subjects/npscelebrates/national-park-week.htm
