Today, when I entered my store, Park Deli, to prepare our regular catering orders, a young homeless person followed me in a few minutes later. He demanded water and food. I explained to him that demanding things instead of asking for help was not the right approach and asked him to leave. He was clearly high or drunk and decided to take what he wanted, looking at me and saying, "There's nothing you can do about it."

I started to come around the counter to give him a good old-fashioned whooping and throw him out, but instead, he ransacked my cooler and chips before running out the door. I called the police, who arrived ten minutes later, and I pointed them in the direction he went. They found and arrested him, but just as he had said, nothing was done. The police echoed this sentiment, and he was released from the station twenty minutes later. He was soon walking in front of my store, talking on an iPhone and staring at my store.

As a small business, every penny counts. When individuals like this can own an iPhone, get drunk or high, and don't take advantage of the shelters and free food provided by the government, what hope do they have? This is one of the reasons why small and even big businesses go out of business, and it's sad that the situation is only getting worse.
