For , a reminder about what's going on with Maryland farms this year: Due to the unsually warm weather in April followed by a sudden freeze on April 21, many, many crops were affected across the state (and from North Carolina to New York).

Stone fruit, grapes, and apples were all affected greatly! Many farms had little to no peaches this year which means that farmers had to pivot and get creative. You can still find lots of other delicious produce that's in season like watermelons, cantalopes, squash, corn and more. Apple season may also look a little different! Now more than ever, your farmers need your support as they navigate the loss of popular items.

All farms are not the same and depending on location, elevation and more some may have more than others, so always check their social media and websites to learn the latest. Check out this segment from WBFF FOX 45 covering how Shaw Orchards pivoted this year due to the weather. Remember to this season, there's still lots to see, eat, and do at the farms!

🍦🐮 Some of the state is heading back to school, but it’s still summer state of mind on our ice cream trail! 🫶love your farms, love your food!💖 in Kent County offers an abundance of fresh produce and fun farm products. Best of all? Their ice cream barn has over 12 flavors with lots of fun ones including cherry chip, lemon cookie and “hint of mint” which is made from mint grown on the farm! 🌾 🍸 Maryland’s Best and the Maryland Grain Producers, Maryland Grain Producers , teamed up to sponsor a cocktail competition in July featuring base liquors that had at least 50% Maryland grain in them. Distilleries from Frederick (Tenth Ward Distilling Company), Washington (Pathfinder Farm Distillery) St. Mary’s (TO***CO BARN DISTILLERY) and Prince George’s(Ann Lawrence) counties competed to win over attendees at the Maryland Commodity Classic, showcasing a true grain-to-glass story in our backyard. Now you can decide your favorite!

🔥 The August Native Plant of the Month features a gorgeous red bloom known as Lobelia cardinalis or in lamen terms, cardinal flower. Native plants are better for the environment because they are natural to our area so they don’t need fertilizer, they don’t require pesticides, and they are beneficial for pollinators, small insects, animals, and birds. 🐝 🦋 🐦

Native plants come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors and this one really stands out! Look for blooms from July-October typically with the biggest, brightest ones in late August. 👩🏻‍🌾 Behind every successful harvest is a story of hard work. In honor of the 2026 International Year of the Woman Farmer, we’re proud to celebrate the women whose leadership, innovation, and determination help make Maryland agriculture stronger every day. Meet Kristin Hayman of Makin Memories Farm in Greensboro in Caroline County. Kristin married into a multi-generational row crop family which has now diversified with poultry houses. Her kids inspire her to keep growing, and educating consumers & fellow farmers keeps her passionate. Kristin says one of the most rewarding parts of farming is sharing their story and raising their kids on the farm. Her advice to the next generation is, “Share your story because there’s someone out there that needs to hear it to be inspired to chase their dreams.” Stories like hers remind us that agriculture is about more than crops and livestock—it is about families, stewardship, perseverance, and community.
