HawkMoth Farm

HawkMoth Farm We are a family-owned and operated farm in Anton Chico, New Mexico founded in 2007. We also raise Awassi sheep and run a homestead dairy.

We use agroecological and traditional acequia practices to grow food, adapted seed, beneficial habitat. HawkMoth Farm is located on the original territories of the Jicarilla and Mescalero Apache, within the historic and present lands of the Anton Chico Land Grant community in New Mexico. Los Ranchitos de Anton Chico Acequia is our primary source of water streaming from the Pecos River and winding

forth from the Sangre de Christo Mountains. Our farm and family give thanks to all past and present people who have stewarded these lands, waters, seeds, and livestock through their lives of labor and love - without you we would not be here today. We also give thanks to the land, water, seeds, plants, animals, sun, and moon for these blessings of life, food, and community. HawkMoth Farm is a small family farm dedicated to agroecology, art, and education and providing abounding sustenance for people and the land. On the farm we employ regenerative processes through weaving traditional ecological practices with deep listening and on the farm research - culminating in four season annual and perennial polyculture fields and gardens with integrated livestock that are chemical free and committed to environmental and social well-being. We are pledged to seed saving with over 70% of all farm produce coming from our own open pollinated seeds and plant breeding program. Our specialty produce includes true shallots, garlic, chile, sweet peppers, flour, dent, and flint corns, squash, heritage grains, tomatoes, cucumbers, flowers, medicinal herbs, blackberries, grapes, apples, and asian pears, along with winter mixed greens and root crops. We raise chickens, runner ducks, Awassi Sheep and Navajo Churro Sheep. We also milk our sheep and produce yoghurt and cheese. We sell produce at the Tierra Encantada Farmers Market in Las Vegas, NM and can sometimes fill local orders upon request. Give us a call, text, or email to find out the next time we will be in town and what items we have available. Stay posted for future workshops and educational opportunities on seed saving, agroecology, and more.

We are excited to announce that HawkMoth Farm has been awarded a New Mexico Economic Development Healthy Food Financing Fund Grant with our proposal for waste wool upcycling for soil and water conservation!

Funding for this project will help us develop, test, and implement a waste wool reclamation facility on our farm to upcycle sheep waste wool into regenerative soil amendments to increase water conservation and retention, boost soil health and crop productivity, and expand sustainable climate adaptation on our farm. In the coming years we hope to grow this work into a state-wide initiative to turn waste wool into an asset supporting wool growers, farmers, gardeners, and our local foodshed.

We just started our first research plot testing wool pellets. Our soil test is headed to CSU and the wool pellets have been applied to two test beds in our field.

We'll keep posting about our project and results as it progresses!

We have a new helper on the farm! We have loved all the dogs we have ever had - and this one has a big chunk of our heart. Did I mention that she is a badass?

She’s still young - so learning slowly on the sheep - but she’s got duck and chicken herding down!

Field report!
Wow the garlic looks great this year… and the shallots are slow but looking good. The beets we replanted for seed saving took a beating with the frosty temps last week, but they should survive.

Bonus - with the very dry spring we hardly any weeds! Woohoo. But we would still love some rain!

We have had a late season lambing since we bred late in November using our new crop of rams and new ewes. The new breeding rams and ewes were approx 8 mos old at breeding and so far their lambs have been heathy, hardy, and gorgeous…. Not to mention damn cute. 3 more births to go! We’ll start milking next week!

Most of the hoop house tomatoes have survived our recent cold temps. New varieties we are trialing this year and older ones we are returning to include: San Marzano, John Baer, High Country, Moscow, Urbikany, Peacevine, Galo de Melon, Ukrainian Purple, Galina, Cosmonaut Volkov, Black from Tula, and Moskovich. Including our old goodies Chocolate Cherry, Loxton Lad, Rosella Purple, and Firebird!

It's been so incredibly dry and hot lately. And the Pecos River and our acequia are getting low. It looks to be a challenging grow season if we don't get rain this summer. But at least the garlic and shallots are busting-out right now! The garlic is the biggest I've ever seen at this time of the year. The shallots are slower, I think due to the very dry winter, but they look pretty good considering!

We are finishing up the last of the tree cutting, pruning and planting and on the farm. Over the last 19 years we have been experimenting with sylvopasture and sylvohorticulture which is implementing trees into farming systems to create ecological and resource value on the farm. This also means cutting down trees as successive trees grow in their place or as the larger environment changes. For instance our pioneer trees (Honey Locusts) were beginning to shade out understory crops so thinning was necessary which also meant that we could transition those spacing into smaller trees to replace the loss. Here we are with the last tree down getting ready to chip for biomass applications, firewood, and latillas. Nothing is wasted!
