Recently I made a post about how awesome wool is and it made a few vegans pretty upset.
I was presented with some pretty interesting arguments such as I should not eat my grandfather....I wasn't sure what to say to that one honestly. But many vegans agreed the only ethical path forward is to ignore thousands of years of mutualism and let all sheep go extinct.
My take is more based on the lived experience of a shepherdess. Overall if we are to fight for sustainable systems they need to be place based, the desert Southwest is not suited for vegetable or fruit production but it is a great place to raise sheep. My Hispanic community and local indigenous communities rely on sheep as an important cultural food in large areas that are food deserts. Wool is one of the best sustainable textiles around.
Grateful for my little woolies and honored to keep many rare breeds and natural-colored sheep alive.
