Blue Feather Farm

Blue Feather Farm Hi everyone! This is the page for Dan Wenny and Wendy Gibbons, the new owners of the blueberry and Christmas tree farm at 133 West St. in Antrim.

We will also be doing natural area monitoring and management on our property as a biological field station.

We had a very quiet day of bird banding today, with just two birds. We opened late due to the cold temperatures, and the windy weather made the mist nets more visible to the birds. But we still had a fun morning, with a bald eagle and red-tailed hawk flying over the farm, as well as the recapture of a female cardinal from last week. She almost exactly matched the delicious pumpkin cupcakes brought by one of our faithful volunteers!

All bird banding is conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Bird Banding Laboratory.

It has been an interesting fall at the BFF Banding Station. We have seen waves of migrants followed by very quiet days, perhaps due to the extremely dry weather. Here are two pictures from yesterday, illustrating wonderfully the range of species we get: a Blue Jay, with populations that live at the farm most of the year, but may move south for part of the winter depending on the size of the acorn crop, and a Palm Warbler, which we never see at the farm except during spring or fall migration. Both do breed in New Hampshire, however, with Palm Warblers actually increasing their population over the past 40 years or so. Palms are among the last warblers to migrate south in the fall! Both are lovely birds to observe and learn from, and apparently both find the farm to be useful and valuable habitat that helps them thrive despite challenging climate conditions! Sometimes when I am out pruning the blueberry bushes in the middle of a chilly February day, I kind of talk to them like people (stay with me, folks, I promise I am going somewhere with this). After all, what else are you going to do while dragging gigantic branches over frozen ground for hours??

So, running with the bushes are people too theme, here, our blueberries are definitely having the last laugh this summer as the CONTINUE to ripen more berries! I’m sorry if you are tired of me posting about blueberries, but I just hate to see them go to waste. I thought for sure the green berries that remained would never ripen with so little rain and so much heat, but here’s what they had to say to me this morning! Definitely laughing. The birds were laughing too. It was very humiliating.

Well, it's been an amazing season for our blueberry bushes, and we really want to thank everyone who has supported our farm by purchasing pounds and pints, sharing your 50/50 splits, and passing along encouraging words! The bushes in the middle of the patch do still have berries, but most are unripe at the current time. You are welcome to come check them out, and perhaps there will still be enough berries here and there for a small pie, but overall, I suspect this season is winding down.

Hopefully everyone had their fill! I know some of you have a freezer full and will be enjoying them in the months to come. See you next year (or earlier if you come check out our Christmas trees in November or December). Hard to imagine such a thing right now with everything so green. Thanks again!

Berries are continuing to look good this morning. Don't let the birds eat them all!

We can't band this hatch year ruffed grouse as it is a game species. But we took some data just for the record. Check out the camouflage of those beautiful neck feathers!

It's baby bird season at Blue Feather Farm. We have been banding many adorably fluffy fledglings, which means the farm is successfully providing nesting habitat for their parents. Here is a picture of one of our floofs - any guesses as to this common backyard species?
