Winter sowing is the ultimate low-maintenance way to get a head start on spring! With just an empty water jug, some seed-starting mix, and your favorite seeds, you can let nature do the work. By planting seeds outdoors in winter, they naturally stratify, toughen up, and burst into life as soon as the weather warmsโjust like they would in the wild! Itโs foolproof, space-saving, and perfect for cold-hardy annuals and perennials.
Good Candidates for Winter Sowing:
๐ Flowers: Snapdragons, echinacea, sweet peas, rudbeckia
๐ฅ Veggies: Spinach, broccoli, peas, kale
How to Do It:
1๏ธโฃ Prep the Jug โ Cut it in half, leaving a hinge near the handle, and poke drainage holes in the bottom.
2๏ธโฃ Plant Your Seeds โ Fill the jug with seed-starting mix and sow your seeds as directed.
3๏ธโฃ Seal & Label โ Tape the jug closed and mark it with the plant name.
4๏ธโฃ Set It & Forget It โ Place it outside and let nature take over until spring!
Come spring, youโll have strong, healthy seedlings ready to plantโno grow lights or indoor space required!
Happy planting! ๐ฟโจ
