Saturday at Pack House Farm:
How exciting to see RAIN this past week! We are still in a significant drought, but at least it has been enough the last two weeks to lift the burn ban.
Won’t complain on the fact it rained on the way to the farm - which meant had to pivot from spreading mulch as planned. Day may not have gone according to plan, but still got a lot done.
Blackberries are starting to bloom. The honeybees were LOVING the flowers - which they’ll do their magic and turn into honey. This year, experimenting on a row by not pruning it. Finished getting out last year’s canes, and I wish yall could see how the bees were working them! First fruit starting to form on the row that wasn’t pruned. Maybe we’ll have a few pints early this year!
It was a good day to scout the field. So.Many.Blueberries!! Things look good and fingers crossed it holds out for a great season. There were some dead branches and shoots, so cut all those out. Nope, I don’t know why they died exactly - but all seemed to have cicada damage near the soil from 2024. Some look like a late frost got them. If there are more dead branches this season, I’ll take it to the NC State Insect and Disease Lab for official diagnosis.
All the cuttings went on the burn pile. Mama Duck is still there and now we have 9 eggs!! I’m not going to burn until they hatch or we find out they were not fertilized… So y’all may have to overlook a massive pile of trees and cuttings this season.
About a month out from showtime, and getting so excited!!
