Many of our girls are milked for our home use in making soap, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream!

You know you love goats when:

You live in Florida. It is 10:27AM and you just finished your morning chores and a list of projects you needed to get done today. It’s 83 degrees out and 85% humidity. You have been shoveling and raking to fight against the wet that can harbor disease and bacteria to keep your babies safe and comfortable. Is it worth it? Yep. Do I love spending my morning dripping sweat and covered in dirt? Nope. But you do it. Because you love them.

Feed all goats and apply udder salve to protect sensitive skin: check

Also! See the picture below of my latest attempt to try to discourage the goats from getting into Benelli’s area while letting her pass through. I know the goats can go through if they really want to, but I’m hoping it will discourage them enough to mostly keep them out. We will see!

Breeding season is well under way! I’ve bred 7 goats AI, one live cover. Three AI and the live cover goat haven’t come back into heat, 4 of the AI’s came back and were bred again. The first breeding was on an estrus synch protocol that I am still working to nail down. The second breeding this weekend was done on a natural cycle. One day soon i’ll post all my notes on my protocol and how I track heats to know when to breed to my website. There is already some educational content up there; and pages for all the goats.

One of the bigger challenges that I have with raising goats is dividing my time between my job, and my farm. I work full time off the farm and my schedule is not very flexible. So when kidding and milking season is in full swing, finding the time to do other things is challenging! So, long overdue but finally at the top of the list today is the results of linear appraisal 2026! The herd is young. The oldest doe on here is a 2 year old second freshener, so the future looks extremely bright.

2026-2027 breeding season has started! There are some new additions to the herd that will be announced soon and breeding plans will be announced as the girls are confirmed bred.

With our Florida hurricane season well under way, I decided to make a post as a reminder to check your pastures for issues frequently. Here is a great example.
We had to take a dead tree down in the pasture, and it hit the branches of some other trees on the way down. The goats were thrilled at the sudden influx of leaves! It was getting late and so I did not check all the branches carefully, since I know my trees and though it only brought down oaks. However, I am aware there is a cherry tree in the corner of my pasture. It is a huge, beautiful tree that I discovered after a hurricane brought down a gigantic limb 2 years ago and we had to panic clean up branches and fence off the area under the tree to prevent the goats from eating the fallen leaves.
Well, when I walked over there today, I found that there was a large branch of the cherry tree on the ground, and the goats had eaten most of the levels. Thankfully; fresh cherry leaves are not toxic. It is only when they have wilted, and the toxins are more concentrated that they can be deadly. Of course, the remaining leaves were now wilting, so there was no choice but to clean up every leaf I could find immediately. Not what I planned to do today, but necessary nonetheless.

We had an awesome day at the Spring Fling goat show in Newberry! No new legs to report, but as young as the herd is I was very proud of the middle of the pack placings against very tough competition. The future is bright!

Annnnnnd that’s a wrap! The final doe of Sandhill Oaks delivered a single buckling uneventfully. I’ll admit I’m glad to see the end of kidding season. Changing our methods to 100% bottle raising has been a rewarding but very challenging endeavor. We ended up with a fantastic kid crop but it has stretched our set up to the limits. There will be a lot of updates next year to make things easier and better. Our final numbers:

4 AI doelings
3 AI bucklings
5 live-cover doelings
3 live-cover bucklings

We have goats for sale and more who will be available soon. We are looking forward to getting our new doelings and first fresheners into the show ring to see how they stack up.

Another amazing morning!! Our most special Blissberry PA Defy the Dawn kidded easily with twin doelings!! These stunning ladies are vibrant and drank their first colostrum bottles like champs. They are sired by our senior herdsire, Blissberry CC Dance N’ the Dark. One of these ladies will be available to a new home once they have unfolded enough to get evaluated. Stay tuned!

We had an INCREDIBLE weekend at the Florida State Fair! Sandhill Oaks CL Ariana finally had some show time and took reserve in her class (2-3 year old milkers) both days. Blissberry CC Fire & Ice took best udder in her class of milking yearlings. Sandhill Oaks LD Sgaeyl took reserve in her class on Sunday.

To really top off the weekend though for my young herd was Sandhill Oaks LD Andarna taking Grand Champion at just 6 weeks old!!! The judge’s comment was “stunning”. A tremendous thank you to the judges, staff, all my goat friends at the fair and my amazing husband for being with me on this crazy goat adventure.

Sooo tired, but elated!! Two very anticipated kiddings happened today and I am over the moon! 100% pasturized milk bottle babies was the goal for this year and we are well on our way! I knew it would be more work, and I know it will be worth it, but hats off to those of you that do large numbers of these kids. I’m exhausted after just two does and the four kids!

Cute baby photo drop! Finally got some nice ones of Zombie’s kids. Zombie is the daughter of her late foundation doe, Paradise Farms Blueberry. These kids were sired by *B Blissberry Dance N The Dark. The black and tan doeling with solid black ears is ready to look for her own herd! Reach out if you are interested!
