It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our founder, Alex Dewar.
In 1963, Alex founded Dewar Nurseries with a vision to bring quality plants and exceptional variety to customers across the Southeast and beyond.
A graduate of the University of Florida with degrees in horticulture and chemistry, Alex began his career breeding Aglaonema before setting his sights on starting a nursery of his own. In those early days, he personally traveled to supermarket chains, peddling plants, and building the relationships that would lay the foundation for Dewar Nurseries.
In the 1980s, Alex entrusted the business to his son, Bill Dewar, who continued building upon his father's vision. Together, they helped transform a small family nursery into one of the nation's largest growers of roses, fruit plants, and seasonal flowers. What began as one nursery, ten employees, and a single pickup truck grew into five nurseries, 500 employees, and a fleet of 75 semis.
More than six decades later, Alex's entrepreneurial spirit, dedication to quality, and passion for horticulture remain at the heart of everything we do.
We are forever grateful for the foundation he built and the legacy that will continue to grow for generations to come.
