More fun and helpful news borrowed from Buff Clucks (I use their products but am not a spokesperson):
Your little egg-maker is wearing about 8,000 feathers. And she keeps every one clean, shiny and rain-ready. So if you see her twist around and nibble her tail... she's not itchy. She's doing her hair. 💅
Her secret? A tiny bump at the base of her tail. So wait, is that bump normal?
➜ Yes. Every chicken has one. It's called the preening gland (fancy name: uropygial gland). Think of it as her own tiny oil factory.
She rubs her beak on it, then pulls the oil down each feather. All 8,000 of them.
And you thought your morning routine was long. 😂
Here's how that oil protects her feathers:
Keeps her dry: It leaves a water-resistant coating, so rain rolls right off.
Keeps feathers bendy: Oiled feathers stay flexible and break less.
Keeps her warm: Smooth, dry feathers hold heat close to her body.
Keeps pests uncomfortable: Mites and lice find her a worse hangout.
Tip to check if her oil factory is running well:
✅ Watch her after a rain shower. A healthy hen fluffs and preens until every feather lies flat.
❌ Not grooming much? That's one of five warning signs.
Oh wait. Got Silkies? ⚠️ Fair warning, their preening gland is reduced or barely works. So rain soaks right in. Give them a dry, covered spot on wet days.
