๐ Bee-hind the Scenes ๐
One of the hardest parts of beekeeping is knowing what to do when a colony begins to fail.
This colony was one of my strongest all summer, but over the past month, it has taken a turn for the worse. There could be several reasons for the declineโmites, a failing queen, or another unforeseen issue.
You can see the queen in this video. She is still being well attended by the other bees, but the brood pattern is extremely spotty, and there are no eggs to be found. There are also not many bees covering the frames. Thatโs a concerning sign that something isnโt right.
Many beekeepers might say itโs time to cut my losses, but I just canโt bring myself to give up on a queen if thereโs still a chance she can pull through! โค๏ธ๐
So, rather than letting the colony dwindle, I decided to consolidate them into a 5-frame nucleus box, provide supplemental feed, and give them the best chance I can to recover.
Now, all I can do is cross my fingers and hope they can pull together, rebuild, and bounce back. ๐ค๐ฏ
Beekeeping isnโt always about harvesting honey and seeing strong, thriving colonies. Sometimes, itโs about making the best decision you can with the information you haveโand giving a struggling colony one more chance.
