I wish people could see what actually goes into putting a bale of hay in someone’s barn.

When you look at the price of diesel and think, “Well, that’s just what farmers have to pay,” remember that diesel isn’t just fuel for a truck.

It powers the tractor that cuts the hay.

It powers the tractor that rakes it.

It powers the equipment that fluffs and turns it.

It powers the baler that makes the bale.

And then there’s the equipment that loads it, moves it, stacks it and eventually hauls it to the person who needs it.

Depending on the equipment and field conditions, one acre of hay can take several hours of tractor/equipment work from cutting through baling and handling. And every one of those hours burns diesel. With the current diesel prices that’s around $50 an hour just to run the tractor.

And diesel isn’t the only thing that went up.

There’s twine, net wrap, fertilizer, seed, herbicide, equipment repairs, tires, oil, parts, insurance, land, taxes and the machinery itself.

A square bale might weigh only 35-60 pounds, but there’s a whole lot more behind that bale than what you see sitting in the field.

And here’s the part I wish more people understood:

This doesn’t only affect farmers.

When diesel goes up, the farmer pays more to produce the food.

The trucker pays more to haul it.

The feed mill pays more to manufacture and transport feed.

The farm supply store pays more to get products delivered.

The grocery store pays more to move products through its supply chain.

And eventually, the consumer pays more.

So when someone with a small homestead goes to buy a bag of feed for their chickens, goats, horses, cows, pigs or rabbits, they’re feeling it too.

When you go to the grocery store and wonder why everything costs more, there’s a good chance fuel is somewhere in that equation.

Farmers aren’t setting these prices because they want to make everything more expensive. Most farmers are price takers, not price makers. We pay whatever the market demands for the inputs we need, and then we hope we can sell what we produce for enough to cover those costs… which here lately just isn’t happening.

And farming doesn’t have an “off” button.

You can’t just decide not to cut the hay because diesel is $7 a gallon.

You can’t tell the cows they’ll have to wait until fuel comes back down.

You can’t tell the chickens to stop eating.

You can’t postpone planting forever.

The work still has to be done.

So the next time you see a farmer charging $8, $10, $15 or more for something they produced, don’t automatically assume they’re making a fortune.

Think about the fuel in the tractor.

Think about the hours spent in the field.

Think about the fertilizer.

Think about the twine.

Think about the machinery sitting in the shop when something breaks.

Think about the land, the taxes, the insurance and the years of investment behind it.

And think about how much more expensive it would be if the people producing our food simply couldn’t afford to keep doing it.

Supporting your local farmer isn’t just about supporting a farmer.

It’s supporting the person who grows the hay.

The person who raises the beef.

The person who grows the vegetables.

The person who raises the eggs.

The person who keeps livestock alive through drought, heat, storms and rising feed costs.

And ultimately, it’s supporting the people who help keep food on your table.

When the cost of producing food rises, eventually everyone feels it.

We’re not asking anyone to feel sorry for us.

We’re asking people to understand what goes into it.

Because there is a whole lot more behind that bale of hay—and that gallon of milk, dozen eggs, package of meat and bag of feed—than most people ever get to see.

Support your farmers. Buy local when you can. And remember that when you pay a little more for something grown or raised locally, you’re helping keep someone working the land instead of watching it disappear.
