Because we recommend keeping chicks on Farm to Flock® Starter Food for their first four to six weeks from hatching, now might be the time to check if they’re ready for Farm to Flock® Grower Food! If you feel their beaks are not quite big enough to handle the bigger bits in Grower, stick with the Starter Food until you think they’re big enough.

Tami Mullins, Purina flock ambassador and owner of Rusty Moose Farms, knows how to grow a flock. Here are her hard-earned tips on her process:

1️⃣ Start slow: Tami raises her flocks using the side-by-side method, so they can see each other and get used to each other’s presence.

2️⃣ Free range during the day: After they’ve grown up together and they’ve reached a safe age to be roaming about, she lets both flocks free range together.

3️⃣ Go to bed apart: At night, they’ll go back to their own separate coops for at least two nights.

With that approach, she hasn’t run into issues once they do move into one big, happy coop together.

Every flock is unique, and luckily, there’s a home for every kind of flock. Here are a few of our favorite kinds:

🏠 Tractor: If you’ve got a small flock in a big yard, this wheelbarrow-inspired structure helps your flock explore new areas, control insects and fertilize the lawn.
🏠 Wagon: This four-wheeled structure works well for housing and moving larger flocks.
🏠 Coop: It’s the classic choice for a reason! This endlessly configurable option is easy to maintain and predator-proof.

Adding to an existing flock? Keeping your young birds apart from your older birds until they are closer to the same size is a good call. Once they’re ready to meet, there are two approaches for the big intro:

🐔🐤 Side-by-Side
Help your birds become familiar with each other by placing your older flock and younger flock in side-by-side runs for one week.

🆓 Free Range
Let the new group out first and then introduce the existing flock. This places the focus on new surroundings rather than new flock members.
