They say to plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow. As I look at the path ahead for this little passion of mine, I’m reminded of a favorite old truth: “Plant your seeds and let the Lord send the rain.” I don’t know exactly where the road leads yet, but I’m tilling the soil and trusting the journey. For now, I'm busy seed starting, waking up the dahlias, and preparing the beds. Check back later for an update on flowers and availability for the 2026 season.🌿✨

It's amazing how the garden changes within hours once the blooms start coming! We spend weeks (sometimes months) staring at dirt - waiting and hoping to see the new life and it seems to take forever! Last night I saw a new one (Rhubarb and Custard) opening, this morning she was open a little more and already at lunchtime she's open all the way! In other ways, Frazzled was far too yellow yesterday but today has settled into her softer gleam and is showing out the pink hidden in her petals. A few new seedlings emerged as well and I'll have to decide whether or not to keep or toss.

It feels like 40 days and 40 nights with all the rain we’ve had, and it’s been hard on some of my dahlias…but that’s what this season has been…hard. I thank God for the small moments and the big ones that I can sit out here and catch my breath.

Realizing where my heart really is when it comes to my little flower farm (hint: it’s the dahlias), I changed gears at the end of February when the reality of time and space and me being a one woman show hit me hard. There are still a few that I won’t let go of like sunflowers, some specialty pumpkins and zinnias! Today I’ll explain why these zinnia seeds are so special! Sarah Grantham Johnston

One of my favorite days of the week! Starting seeds on this rainy Wednesday morning! I usually prefer to seed start on Mondays so that I can keep a true 2 week gap in my succession planting. It really doesn’t matter too much, but I like my calendar to be consistent. This week though I’ve been busy getting the rest of the dahlia tubers out of storage and the baby ranunculus moved out to the greenhouse before they go in the ground in a couple of weeks.

Happy Wednesday, y’all!

And so it begins! It may be freezing outside, but we’re starting our ranunculus today! 100+ corms presprouting! In a couple of weeks they will get potted up or planted out with frost cloth ready to go for the inevitable frosts we will have in February and March.
Later this week, we will be starting some eucalyptus , yarrow, digitalis and bellflower using a “new to us” method of soil blocking. Soil blocking allows the air to reach the roots making them stronger, keeping them from becoming root-bound and ready for transplant with minimal root disturbance.

The Dahlia beds will be exploding this summer, but in the meantime it’s more planning and prepping! Each card represents a variety that we will be growing and possibly cross breeding on our tiny farm. I’m a visual learner, and this helps me organize which beds or rows I want each variety to go into as well as
visualize which I’d like to cross breed for future varieties. Breeding takes a minimum of 3 years to ensure stability and good genetics, so I want to make the most of it from the beginning with what I think will be the best choices. I can’t wait to take you along with me on this adventure!

Forever growing. Forever learning.
