Oak Springs Farm Our little piece of heaven. Hard work, sheep, chickens, and lots of love.

In early 2016, George said "I think we have enough in savings for a downpayment on the retirement home." Somewhere between then and December 2016, the house hunt turned into a farm hunt, and the next thing we knew we had bought 25 acres of rolling pasture and neat little outbuildings. Before the papers were even signed, Karen had acquired our first two sheep; who spent the winter in an old corn crib while we prepared the barn. We've since expanded to 30+ sheep, five cats, two bunnies, four ducks, two-dozen chickens and more on the way. We also started a little B&B (minus the breakfast) in our over-the-barn refurbished loft. Our animals love all the visitors, and we are excited about expanding the business to full on-the-farm get-aways, with classes, work-study programs, and sheep-related product sales.

The circle of life is bittersweet on the farm. This morning, we said goodbye to our elderly ewe Patrina, whom we rescued 4 years ago. Patrina had a frozen knee the last couple of years but it never slowed her down until this summer. She passed peacefully at 12 years old. we will miss her loud Baritone BAAAA and her silly way of always wearing her breakfast on her head.

Also today, we brought home a new ewe lamb to the farm, Praline, who happens to be Patrina’s great great granddaughter. Praline joins the rest of Patrina’s progeny here (2 granddaughters, 2 great grand daughters, and 2 more great great grand daughters) Praline left her mama and sister at Wildrose Farm, but she’s got tons of family here at Oak Springs.

Is this not the sweetest looking “little” boy? This is Potter. He’s just over three months old and already over 80lbs. A Texel/Hampshire/Suffolk cross, he had a rough start at life with a 3.5 hour labor. Originally planned for our market sales, his gentle character and tenacity for life lead us to redirect him towards our breeding program as a terminal sire - replacing his gentle giant of a father, who we lost to a head injury last fall. He’s so gentle, and we hope he is a strong addition to our program.
