Hi guys! What’s going on at the farm? Been a little quiet on here because I’ve been busy.

I started planting in early May and ran out of room to plant at the end of May. My overflow lot of tubers got planted in grow bags the first week in June- hoping for some late blooms. made room in the vegetable garden for my seedlings.

Dahlia chores I’m up to now:

1. Cheering on emerging plants - so exciting to see the new plants coming up.

2. Weeding - I get tons of weeds in my composted horse manure. Easiest to catch them early before they take over the world.

3. Pinching a few plants that are mature enough to encourage bushier plants

4. Hope to start fertilizing today on the older plants. I like to use Alaska fish fertilizer even if it’s stinky.

5. Today I’ll lay out the drip lines and Doug will test and repair leaks. We are expecting a heat wave over the weekend and I haven’t watered at all yet.

Even though the dahlia blooms are not ready, I’m loving the roses, peonies, mock orange, honeysuckle, and stock. Doug and I got to sneak in a trail ride a couple days ago. Each season brings its own beauty and I’m grateful to be able to enjoy growing. Hope your garden is growing well.

A few bicolor dahlias.

Tartan (B FD BI) introduced by Frost from New Zealand around 1951.

Contraste (BB FD BI) introduced by Chevalier from France in 1957.

Radegast is not ADS classified but the website Dahlia Addict suggests (B ID BI). It was hard to find information on its origin, but one site suggests this dahlia was hybridized by Gala in the Czech Republic in 1996.

I like all three, but if I could only choose one, I like the color of Radegast best.

As I’m planting my dahlias I get so excited about the blooms to grace the garden. Today I planted some Lakeview Lady tubers, and this one is probably in my top 10 favorites. It was new to me last year, and I hope to grow it every year.

Lakeview Lady (B FD PK) introduced in 2024 by Bernie Wilson. Looks great in the garden, performs well in shows, and holds up in bouquets. She is such a beauty, and I can’t wait to see her bloom again.

Enjoy the little joys in the garden. The first tubers to emerge (not counting some I left in all winter) are Chimacum Cathleen. Just planted these on May 4th. I’m just excited to have liftoff in the garden!

Chimacum Cathleen is a light blend waterliliy dahlia originated by the Smiths in 2006.

I planted 11 beds of waterlilies in my backyard and ran out of room. So I planted 2 more beds up by my veggie garden. I found a few more to plant, and I’m not sure where they will go. Something about the delicate appearance of waterlilies makes it my favorite form of dahlia.

In between the rain storms, I’m hoping to put in some balls and mini ball. Hope your planting journey is right where you want it to be. I’m always feeling chronically behind, but I’ll just keep on keeping on.

I’m in the middle or at least the beginning of planting season. I have a little whiplash between yesterday’s 80-degree weather and today’s 55 and raining. The rain is slowing me down, but I’m still moving forward. As I was out spreading compost, I found a clump beginning to grow - oops I missed that one when digging last fall.

I was able to clearly identify Tahoma Odyssey from the marking on the mother tuber. If you are ever looking for a marker that will hold up over time, try the Artline Garden Marker. I use it to write on tubers, tags, and flagging tape.

I replanted the clump in a pot, and I’m looking forward to seeing it bloom again.

Tahoma Odyssey is a light blend mini ball hybridized by Les Connell in 2008. I’ve heard that Odyssey is the seed parent to Tahoma Odyssey.

Spring is a time of hope! It’s also a time of hard work and planting.

Over the next few months the garden transforms from a dirt farm to an oasis of beautiful blooms. It seems like I wait for the blooms all year, and spring is the time I can move forward from a blank canvas to a more colorful and beautiful space.

I’m excited for longer days and warm soil. Here’s to hands in the dirt!
