Winterization Guidelines for Virginia

Here's what we do to get our bees ready for winter. Certainly not the only way, but it works for us!

https://www.commonwealthbee.com/post/winterization-guidelines-for-virginia

We know that winter is the selector of great stock. Colonies whose genetics and preparations are strong will survive, while those weaker or less productive colonies will die. That being said, there are many things we, as beekeepers, can do to set the colonies up for success. Below is a list of thing...

Beautiful day to work on this historic original slate roof in Leesburg. We were able to remove all of the slates intact so that the property managers can preserve its original charm. Previous attempts to remove this colony by means of spraying were unsuccessful. We were excited to be given the opportunity to safely relocate this colony!

Another colony safely relocated. This time out of a farmhouse in Lodoun County. The bees had been living in this dormer for years and apparently threw the standard straight comb rules out the window, building a maze of twisted comb around this HVAC duct.

While transferring this extracted colony to their new home after a cutout, we noticed a few bees at the bottom working on a small hive beetle. They’re tough for the bees to remove, but it’s a good sign that these girls have a plan to get them out of the hive.
