I spoke at my local city council meeting tonight. For someone who fought her high school teachers tooth and nail to avoid public speaking, I feel like they’d appreciate how far I’ve come. 😅 I was still shaking, but I’m glad it wasn’t obvious in my voice. Some things are worth the discomfort. ❤️

My heart is heavy. 💔 I said goodbye to my best girl, Alice, last night. She was one of my original four and hands down, the friendliest and most affectionate chicken I’ve owned. There is a very large hole in my heart today, but I’m so thankful for the years of joy we had together.

Alice isn’t feeling great. 💔 She’s hands down my favorite hen and I don’t know if this is something she’ll recover from or if I’m going to say goodbye to her soon. 😔

She’s a Golden Comet, which is a breed bred specifically for egg production. She is one of the first four chicks I purchased and at that time, I didn’t know that production breeds have significantly shorter lifespans. (The selective breeding to increase egg production also increases the risk of reproductive cancers.) Her eggs this season have been weird (misshapen and with pieces of shell inside, so I haven’t been including them in packaged dozens) and I was wondering if that was indicative of a greater issue. She got a bath and a blow dry last night and is enjoying the sunshine today. I’m hoping I get to keep her for another year or two, but if her time is sooner, she’ll be comfortable and know she’s loved. ❤️

Tub reset! It took two minutes to get from “clean” to this, but at least there’s less p**p for now. 😂

Chicks and mugs!!! Bathtub showed off her modeling skills in one of my mugs (scroll for outtakes). I have a few more mugs that aren’t pictured, but I need to adjust my light box so there’s less glare washing out their colors. It’ll also be another month or two before I have new mugs as the skin on my hand is still recovering from The Hatchet Incident™️. 😅

Also included in this carousel: the babies enjoying breakfast and the first chick escaped the tub and needed help getting back in. (I heard her “I’m lost!” cheeps and raced in. I suspect others have been flying out and back in because I’ve been finding chicken p**p on the bathroom floor after I cleaned the floor following this little one’s escape.)

Also, also: I took a couple of the babies over to visit today! Bailey and Bri were both amazingly good sports about the birds’ lack of bowel control. 😅 And they named two of the previously unnamed chicks: Violet (pictured) and Shadera. 🥰
