Chubby Bunny Farm

Chubby Bunny Farm Chubby Bunny Farm Not everyone is made to be farmer. But I was made to be a farmer. We hope that you will grow with us as well. Cheers
Michael Deitering

Not everyone was made to be doctor, or an accountant, or a waiter, or any of the many many jobs needed in this wide world. In 2014, I founded Chubby Bunny Farm with the singular goal to provide for others, while providing for myself. In 2015, I began to hone my craft and in 2016 left all other support to follow this venture. In 2016 my partner Melina Meave joined me in this mission, and together w

e grew in so many senses of the word. 2017 is shaping up to be the most bountiful year yet! Through basil and beets, rabbits and radishes Chubby Bunny Farm will continue to grow.

A beautiful day at the market with Melina and Rowan!

04/22/2023

On this Earth Day consider our local farms and farmers, who work hard when preserving our planet, like Grandview Family Farm, Chubby Bunny Farm, Hazel Blue Acres, Macomber Farms. Firetrail Farm, Swan Song Farm and Hayton Farms Inc. and Flourish Organic Farms and introducing two new farms Reconnecting Roots Farm and Tiny Stem Microgreens.

Many of our farms have CSA purchases available now, or starting May 13th when the Farmers Market opens you will be able to purchase produce and flowers at the Farmers Market.

Here are things to think about locally grown produce on Earth Day.

It's Often Pesticide Free: Many local food producers choose to use organic and natural pest repellants to preserve the health of the food they distribute. Foods produced by large-scale agricultural operations are often mass sprayed with pesticides.

It's Preservative Free: Locally grown food doesn't require long trips to be transported across the country until they reach their final destination. For this reason, food doesn't need to have any preservatives and other chemicals added to it in order to keep it fresh during transit.

It Offers Improved Nutrition: Eating locally grown food can help deliver high-nutrient content. This is for several reasons, including the lack of chemicals and greater freshness. Local food is also a better way to ensure you eat seasonally. When you eat food that is grown within its natural season, the flavors are much fuller, and it tastes better.

It Preserves Small Farmland: When local farms are established, eating local protects farmland. Without small-scale farms, the land might otherwise be developed for industrial or commercial use. Additionally, farmland attracts other types of biodiversity and gives animals, insects, and birds a place to live and thrive.

It Reduces Food Miles: When we compare local farm-grown food to imported food, the differences can be numerous. Imported food is shipped sometimes hundreds or thousands of miles to arrive at the supermarket. "Food miles" is a term used to describe the distance that food has traveled, from the place it was produced to the place where it will be sold to the consumer. The more food miles accumulated during food transportation, the more fossil fuels are consumed. This transportation causes greater carbon emissions. Reducing food miles helps alleviate our dependence on fossil fuels, reduce air pollution, and cut back on greenhouse gas emissions.

It Promotes Accountability: When food is raised and grown locally, the consumer better understands how and where their food is being produced. This awareness encourages local farmers to use sustainable agriculture practices and be more accountable to safe ecological practices, which may include not using pesticides or implementing systems that are less resource intensive than commercial agriculture. Many local food producers will actively pursue an organic certification to further improve the nutritional value of their food and reduce their environmental impact.

Happy New Year's eve! A new baby and a new Greenhouse! Rowan was born the 15th he has already made it through wintry storms, meeting chickens, farm dogs, and tending to the greenhouse!

2022 has brought many many changes to the farm, and expectations are high to make 2023 even more life changing! Thank you for being a part of this whirlwind experience, and be sure to watch as the farm continues to change and grow!

A little time lapse of putting up purlins for the new greenhouse!

Being brave is not about the absence of fear, it's about having the courage to be vulnerable – to press on in spite of fear.

This greenhouse has put me in a vulnerable spot this year. Vulnerable to failure financially, mentally, and failure of a sense of my own capabilities. Yet every step closer, those fears fade. Friends, neighbors, loved ones all help to the feeling of vulnerability and this farm changing project comes closer to completion every day!

Growing a regenerative farm means improving the ecology, even those species that have a bad reputation. These wandering garter snakes are the only native garter snake in Washington state. They have adapted to make worms (including wireworm!) And slugs their main diet. A good undisturbed winter home is vital to a thriving population.

What makes a good hibernation spot for snakes? Rock piles! The very same rocks which we pull from the fields to create more luscious vegetables. By properly managing one nuisance on the farm (rocks) we can create a proper habitat which fights another nuisance on the farm (slugs)!

As awesome as this may be, we can take it one step further! By planting succulents interspersed in the rocks we can create a living environment which can mitigate oversaturation during the rainy season.

Cooking out this weekend? If you picked up some scapes, give grilling a try! Mild in garlic flavor but full of crunchy texture these delicious greens do well for about 10-15 minutes on low heat. We paired pur scapes with a slow cooked brisket. Fantastic!!
