What is the mission behind Walter Family Genetics and Work ‘N’ Walter Farms?

I started Work ‘N’ Walter farms in my freshman year of high school as a FFA Suprevised Ag Experience project. My goal then was to manage a few sows on my family farm in memory of my grandfather Harvey Work and the famous “Work Chester” brand! In the spring of 2020 amidst all the excitement in the world I purchased my first half dozen gilts from the late Tom Rake.

At the risk of sounding immodest I was incredibly blessed to receive enormous support from both local customers and national clients. This fostered my belief that a kid still can make an homest living raising commercial purebred swine. Over the past couple of years we have focused on building our footprint in the Purebred Berkshire Pork Market! Today under Walter Family Genetics we manage a Berkshire pork production system supporting Only Independent Iowa Family Farms. We have also recently rebranded the Work ‘N’ Walter Farms name into a first of its kind value added Berkshire Pork Snack Company! We feel that by managing two programs with one mission we can effectively support the industry that made me who I am.

Our means and production model may have changed but our mission today is the same as it was when 14. I still believe the best life for a hog is on an independent family swine farm.

In my not so humble opinion this is what a trailer load of fat Berkshires should look like! I’m all in on fat, even, and perfectly colored purebred Berkshire market hogs. In fact these hogs were so dead even that there was a 4 lb difference in carcass weights on the rail.

Adding on to my trip at the end of August. We have over 40 breeding age boars on feed and an absolute pile of ready to breed gilts that are ready for new homes. We also have a large assortment of Fat Hogs and feeders as well.

It’s about that time of the year to think about filling isolation facilities with Premium Paying Purpose-Bred Purebred Berkshire gilts. (Try saying that ten times fast!)

Let’s face it, winning a Tamworth show out of an actual Tamworth sow is HARD! When Tim texted me and told me that not we not only hung one banner but two out of a pair of littermates I was blown away!

This is what it looks like when you keep the sow power in them. These two were out of The Legacy sow who is a Mat sib to TLACs Dam.

The sow behind these is LINEBRED Kadin Walter, Harvey Work, and Tom Rake Genetics. What a storm!

Old line Chester White Hog.

Final Days on a heritage Rake sow. (Stand up * Frog Party * Promise Keeper)

This boar comes with a pedigree full of some of the most productive sows in the breed. if you get on the pedigree search you can see how deep both sides of this pedigree are.

Study the phenotype. He is sound as a cat and as athletic as a University of Iowa Wrestler. The combination of the big top and length is sure to build great feeder hogs as well as replacement females. This pair of boars is the culmination of everything I know about putting together Chester’s. I believe these two have enough quality to carry the legacy of not only their pedigrees herdmark but my grandfathers as well.
