We're excited to announce our first-ever Hinterhaus Bottled-in-Bond spirit - the 100 Proof LANTERNA Brandy Batch #1 🥃
Few spirits capture the history and character of California like grape brandy- the first distilled spirit of our state. With a strong nod to our region's rich tapestry of brandy distillers who made their way west during the California Gold Rush, we believe it's high time for a broader rediscovery of this refined world class spirit.
The name LANTERNA pays homage to the Italian immigrants from Genoa whose landmark Lanterna di Genova lighthouse peaks out from inside the bottle on our double-sided back label. The old lighthouse was the last thing they saw of their homeland as they sailed west to embark on new lives in our home county of Calaveras, California.
When they arrived under the canopy of chapparal and pines, the Sierra foothills were aglow in the light of another lantern - the kerosene kind. Though the Genovesi came to our county seeking gold, it was their Old World tradition of crafting w**e and grape brandy that took hold in the Sierra Foothills with the influx of new residents.
We've been patiently waiting to bottle this brandy for over 4 years. Wanting to do justice to both California's well known w**e grapes and our own Hinterhaus wh***ey program, we distilled it from local chardonnay grapes before aging it in our own ex-bourbon casks for over 4 years.
With its Bottled-in-Bond status, we present LANTERNA at 100 Proof under strict federal supervision. Never anything added- just the pure essence of grapes distilled and aged at our California distillery the same way it's been done for nearly 2 centuries here.
