Here comes the 'yellow season'.
While living amongst the loblolly pines, we get a front row seat to the dropping of the pollen. Where freshly washed cars, lawn furniture and everything outdoors take on a flush of yellow.

On this snow day here in SE NC, I'm playing with some willow clippings. I made a primitive Celtic cross.
These are fresh stems that have been in water for almost a week.
*First secured one end to weave twigs.
*Tighten up the weave by gently pushing together.
*Tied ends with 100% rayon ribbon.
*Trimmed ends.
Building skills. Next time will be tighter.
Willow cuttings will be available for sale next year. Varieties include: Showtime (used here, red color), Rubykins (yellow), Cinera (yellow), and Caprea (brown stem that flowers, lovely yellow p***y willow blossoms).

There is much happening at Foxsmyth Herbal this month. Prepared rows now have 200 elderberry starts planted (100+ more to go).
The farm building is nearly complete. Jeff and I are painting in anticipation of epoxy flooring application later this month.
The wash/pack space has Trusscore paneling installed, waiting on the sink, tables and shelving. Freezers and dehydrating equipment will be purchased later this year.
BEMC has run power line to the property, it is not on yet, but soon.....

I harvested wild elderberry this week, about 2 lbs of berries. These were plants on the property at the edge of the woods.
Yielded 1 qt of tasty syrup. Spiced juice and mixed with honey.
The European elderberry, Sambucus nigra, had one small cluster on the 1st yr shrub. They are slightly larger berries (see photo).

We are beginning to clear the land for elderberry cultivation.
Step 1- clear a path for soil tests and measure stream on North side of property.
Step 2- build an entry bridge (culvert) to get equipment onto the land. Permits from DOT
Step 3- clear brush to plant a cover crop
Step 4- Apply for well and septic with Brunswick County.
Step 5- get a bldg on the land to house equipment.
