M R Gardens

M R Gardens Healthy Plants, Healthy Landscapes Our small, neighborhood nursery primarily focuses on native flowers and complementary plants.

We offer species that benefit the ecosystem, as well as plants that encourage homeowners to participate in their landscape. It's best to order plants at our online store nativeplantsasheville.com, and we'll arrange a pickup date that's convenient for you. Or you can visit us during one of our open houses. Check plant show dates at mrgardens.net. We hold tours of our one-of-a-kind passive solar gre

enhouse, as well as of our ecological landscape, which includes pollinator plant gardens, "Microbe Rich" vegetable beds, and food forests. We also provide garden coaching and landscape design for customers who need support in arranging M R Gardens plants in their landscape. M R Gardens started in 2011 by selling vegetable starts at a roadside stand just outside owner Megan Riley's house. In 2015, the farm expanded to include 1,600 square feet of growing space and two acres of an edible/ecologically maintained landscape. As we grow, we retain our commitment to sustainability, community and high quality plants!

Another favorite - Mistflower - is now at the Plants for Wildlife booth! It offers a sea of purple blooms summer into fall. Always nice to find a low-growing native flower.

Calico Beardtongue - a Penstemon that can take shade - is also now availableđź’ž

A reminder that we carry groundcovers that complement native perennials. This sweet alyssum (both white and Painted Carpet varieties) fill out the bed quickly so the perennials can take their time growing out. They are sometimes annuals but often self-seed. Since they attract ample beneficial insects, helping to keep a balanced ecosystem in the garden, people often plant them around their veggies.

Go to nativeplantsasheville.com and choose the Herb/Groundcover sectionđź’š

A few years ago, we added Downy Wood Mint (Blephilia ciliata) to our catalog, and we almost quit growing it because we didn’t have luck with it returning reliably in some places we planted it, but the locations were all medium moisture. Then we transplanted some pots we suspected were goners in dry soil at the top of the hill, and if you scroll here to photos 2&3, you can see what happened. What a lovely explosion of color in late spring! Many of them have returned for a third year. We also sprinkled some lime in the holes because botanists had told us they appear in areas heavy with limestone.

So we decided to grow it again this year, now that we know it’s more reliable in dry soils. You can pick up yours at today, or order for pickup at nativeplantsasheville.com 💚

Our helpers return with such lovely photos from our Plants for Wildlife kiosks, but our days are so packed this time of year, we haven’t been able to find time to share them. So you need to go visit them in person! While we were restocking at Fifth Season yesterday, we could hardly find a quiet moment to do inventory because the plants were flying into customers’ hands before they got on the shelf!
