● Thought you might like this epic historic photo showing Lucy Smith and Pauline Ranken ascending Salisbury Crags in Edinburgh, Scotland. Here is the photo evidence that they did this climb while wearing long, ankle-length skirts, hats, blouses and smart shoes, in the year 1908!

The rocks of the Crags include columnar basalts and dolerite outcrops as 46-metre (151 ft) cliffs at the top of a subsidiary spur of Arthur’s Seat, which rises on the west of Holyrood Park.
This climb posed dangers! The only protection these women had was a length of rope tied around each of their waists - they had no other safety equipment or protective gear, like helmets, harnesses or spikes.

In 1908, the ladies formed their own club — the Scottish Climbing Club — after being barred from joining the “for-men-only” Scottish Mountaineering Club. By 1909 the climbing club had fourteen members

We have now fully retired from the maple syrup business. We no longer do mail order and our sugarhouse is not open. Its been a fun 35 years, and many thanks to our customers.

02/25/2019

Just to remind folks, our sugarhouse restaurant is no longer open, retirement beckons! In the meantime, you can go to North Hadley Sugar Shack in Hadley (they tap our trees now), or go to Davenports Sugarhouse in Shelburne, now being operated by the Olanyk family of Ashfield. The Olanyk's operated our sugarhouse restaurant for two years after I stopped operating it, so if you liked the food and service you had here the last two years we were open, you'll find the same at Davenports this sugaring season.

Today's the day - our last day to have the sugarhouse restaurant open for business. After a mild, almost snowless winter what do we get this morning? SNOW! But just and inch or so. The roads are bare and snow-free and the woods are a winter wonderland. Come to our sugarhouse for this very special day . . . our last in the food service business. And since its Bicycle Day here today, arrive by bike and get free fritters. Arrive by bike in the afternoon and maybe you'll get free beer too!

"Trudging across the tundra, mile after mile,
Trudging across the tundra,
Right down to the Parish of St. Alphonzo,
Where I stole the margarine" and blew up the latrine."

OK my friends, I'll buy breakfast on Sunday for the first person who can honestly tell me what this quote is from. By "honestly" I mean, no Internet searches. AND - tell me what is missing.

We are offering a $1 donation for every breakfast served on Saturday to go to the Ashfield Lake Dock Re-building Fund.

Sunday is the 5th annual (and last) Bike to the Sugarhouse Day. Everyone who arrives by bike on Sunday will get free fritters.

Specials this weekend:
- Chocolate Chip pancakes with strawberries and maple ice cream.
- Mixed veggie and cheddar omlette with your choice of two fritters or toast

- Apple fritters

- Skinny's egg sandwich with your choice of two fritters

DON'T FORGET - THIS WILL BE OUR LAST WEEKEND BEFORE CLOSING THE RESTAURANT FOR GOOD.

This weekend is going to be it folks - we are closing the sugarhouse restaurant for good after this weekend. Its been a great run of 30 years, serving up untold gazillions of pancakes and fritters to the hungry public.

We always have the last day each year be Bicycle Day at the Sugarhouse, arrive on a bike and get free fritters. Yes, we are doing this agin this weekend, but Sunday looks to be pretty cold to be out on a bike. Let's see how many hardy souls show up!

Everything in the kitchen and restaurant is now FOR SALE. See anything you like? Make me an offer.
