FRIDAY FROM THE FARM:

Happy vernal equinox! 🌅 Winter is making way for the season of rebirth and renewal. 🌱

Here’s what we’ll be doing this weekend:

✅ taking down the bird feeders - bears are starting to stir so it’s a good time to give the feeders a scrubbing and pack them away for the summer.

✅ cleaning out and/or putting up the bird houses - we’ve already heard the male wren claiming his territory 🎶 so it’s a good time to get their summer family homes ready.

✅ trimming the fruit trees - our micro-orchard needs some love and now is a good time to prune the branches 🍎

Something sunny 🌞 on a cloudy day - Zizia aurea (golden Alexander), a lovely perennial native to eastern North America and found on the farm. 💛 The shallow nectaries in the flowers attract small beneficial bees, wasps, and flies.

✅ special value to native bees - attracts large numbers of native bees

✅ supports conservation biological control - attracts predatory or parasitoid insects that prey upon pest insects

✅ larval host plant for the Black Swallowtail butterfly

🥒 a blonde cucumber? Indeed! Boothby’s blonde is an heirloom cucumber 🥒 maintained by the Boothby family of Maine for more than 5 generations. And we know why - it’s awesome! Excellent crisp sweet flavor, amazing for bread & butter pickles. 😋
