It really is the most wonderful time of the year.
Lilac season.
One whiff catapults me back to childhood. Wafting aimlessly around our backyard, waiting for the next excitement to break the malaise. If I had to choose, lilac is my favorite flower.
These beauties will be featured in my Mother’s Day bouquets. IFKYK. Don’t miss out. Pre-orders end midnight on Thursday. I’m almost sold out so don’t delay.

I had the absolute pleasure of designing a floral piece for Hartford’s Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art’s Fine Art & Flowers this weekend. I was given Emilio Cruz’s Homo Sapiens ( #10) painting to interpret with flowers. The word that came to mind at first viewing was ‘flummoxed.’ Wood was an obvious launching point and we started with a large root from an autumn olive bush and built the form from there. was a woman possessed and I let her take the lead. She wielded a chain saw and used the largest drill bit I’ve ever seen to secure the root to the wooden base. She saw nuance in the colors and body parts, and expertly crafted the curves and shape. The coup de grâce was finding the perfect root to depict the sternum and delineate the shoulders. This exercise is my favorite thing I do all season. Thank you and all the other participating designers for the inspiring event!

I had the honor of flowering the luncheon for the Japanese Ambassador at the Governor’s Mansion today. Cherry blossoms were the star of the show alongside tulips, narcissus, hellebores and quince. It was a lovely kickoff to another season of nurturing Mother Earth’s bounty.
