While Snake Creek has grown and evolved over the years, our roots remain in the cow-calf business.

A healthy calf starts long before calving season. Through genetic selection, proper nutrition, and sound management, we work to give every calf the best possible start. From fetal programming in utero to receiving quality colostrum after birth, each step plays a role in building a strong immune system and setting calves up for success.

Nutrition remains a priority through weaning, where we focus on reducing stress by introducing calves to new rations, limiting travel, and minimizing commingling with unfamiliar cattle. While vaccines are an important tool, they are only one piece of the puzzle. Healthy calves are the result of genetics, nutrition, management, and attention to detail every step of the way.

Every calf on the ground today represents years of planning and a commitment to building a stronger herd for the future.

For those interested in the science behind fetal programming and calf development, we’ll share a helpful article from University of Nebraska in the comments.

Genomic testing gives us another tool to help evaluate the cattle we manage and the genetics that will influence future generations.

During processing, customers have the option to collect a tissue sample that is sent to GeneMax for genomic testing. The results provide additional information on traits related to fertility, growth, carcass merit, and overall performance.

One of the greatest advantages of genomic testing is the ability to evaluate cattle based on overall data rather than focusing on a single trait. Instead of selecting for one characteristic at the expense of others, genomic information helps identify cattle with multi-trait excellence and balanced genetic potential.

When combined with breeding records, pregnancy diagnosis results, and individual animal identification, genomic testing can help producers make more informed selection decisions and continue building a herd that meets their long-term goals.

At Snake Creek Cattle, we are committed to providing the tools and information our customers need to make confident decisions about the future of their operation.

Once a group of cattle leaves a pen, the work isn't finished. Pens are cleaned and leveled to prepare for the next group, helping provide a clean and comfortable environment for incoming cattle.

Water tanks are also cleaned to ensure cattle have access to fresh, clean water from day one. These routine management practices help support animal health, improve pen conditions, and set cattle up for success throughout their time in the yard.

Every animal that comes through our processing facility receives a health and identification check to help set them up for success.

During processing, cattle are vaccinated, dewormed, administered vaccines, and PI Test (persistently infected) to support herd health. They are also assigned an EID tag for individual identification and record keeping.

Feeder cattle receive a lot tag and a Ralgro implant to support growth performance. Breeding heifers receive a four-digit Allflex Maxi tag that corresponds with their birth year, allowing us to easily identify and track females throughout their productive lives.

For producers interested in gathering additional information, tissue samples can also be collected for genomic testing. The information gathered during processing helps us make informed management decisions and provide valuable data to our customers.

Every day begins with a ride through the pens.

Our cowboys make their way through the pens, observing cattle closely and monitoring their overall health and behavior. Because they see these cattle every day, they become familiar with each pen and are often the first to notice subtle changes in an animal's attitude, appetite, or movement.

Animals that need additional attention are pulled from the pen and brought into the hospital for evaluation and treatment. Their daily observations and consistency play a critical role in early disease detection, animal well-being, and overall cattle performance.

The relationships built through these daily routines help ensure every animal receives the care and attention it deserves.

A special thank you to Corey and Tanner for the dedication they bring to this responsibility every day. Whether it's raining, below 0°F, or 110°F in the summer heat, they are out in the pens doing their job and caring for the cattle. Their commitment, consistency, and attention to detail are an important part of the care we provide and the success of our operation.

Customers have the option to have their breeding heifers freeze branded with their tag number following pregnancy diagnosis, creating a permanent form of identification that remains with the animal throughout its lifetime.

This identification method helps improve traceability, support accurate record keeping, and provide added confidence in the cattle we manage on behalf of our customers.

Interested in learning more about freeze branding? We've shared a helpful Mississippi State University Extension resource in the comments.

Nutrition plays a critical role in cattle performance, which is why ration formulation is backed by both data and experience.

We work closely with a PHD nutritionist to analyze performance data, evaluate feed ingredient inventories, and formulate rations that meet the nutritional needs of our cattle while considering feed availability and cost. Feed plans are continuously monitored and adjusted to help optimize performance throughout the feeding period.

Closeout data is also reviewed to evaluate feed conversions and overall performance, allowing us to make informed decisions and continually improve our feeding programs. This data-driven approach helps ensure cattle receive consistent nutrition while maximizing efficiency and value for our customers.

Feed delivery is about more than just filling bunks. It's about consistency and accuracy.

Using GPS-guided feeding technology through Micro Beef Technologies, our feed truck directs drivers to the correct pen while recording ingredients, deliveries, and feeding data throughout the process. This helps ensure cattle receive the proper ration at the correct amount.

Not every pen has the same nutritional needs. Whether cattle are being fed for finishing, backgrounding calves, or developing replacement heifers, each group has its own set of goals and ration requirements. Accurate feed delivery helps ensure every pen receives the nutrition intended for its stage of production.

By combining technology with attention to detail, we can maintain ration consistency, improve feeding accuracy, and support cattle performance every day.

A fetus can typically be detected around 30 days post-breeding. At 45–60 days post-breeding, we work closely with Ashland Veterinary Center, Inc. to use ultrasound technology to determine pregnancy status and identify whether heifers conceived through AI or natural service. This information helps us track reproductive success, make informed decisions for the future, and provide valuable data to our customers.
