Well… we have a calf in our basement 🐄😅
And it was totally worth it.
Yesterday this little guy went downhill fast. He only drank half a bottle one feeding then he didn’t want the next feeding either, and with the cold, he just couldn’t keep his body temperature up. We got a heater on him in the barn and tried warming him up, hoping he’d perk up enough to eat. He drank a little, but we could tell he needed time to warm up.
So last night we loaded him into a large dog crate and brought him into our unfinished basement. This morning we went down and he practically launched himself out of the crate to get to his bottle 🍼 He looks SO much better already. We’ll keep feeding him today to build his strength back up, but my hope went from zero to a whole lot better.
Anyone who knows Lane knows he just wants to LOVE on animals 🤍 He kept coming over, resting his head on the calf, saying “awwww.”
Sorry, buddy — this little guy can’t live in the basement forever 😅
Lane was not happy when we had to go back upstairs and leave the calf (last pic).
Just to clarify — the cold itself was only a factor in this situation. When this guy missed one feeding, then two, his body didn’t have the nutrients needed to help maintain his temperature. That’s when he started to go downhill.
Once he’s strong again, with a well-bedded pen and a calf jacket, he’ll handle the cold just fine 🐮
