Hi Everyone,

I am sorry but we will not be at the Worthington Farmers' Market tomorrow (Saturday, June 24th). We do plan on returning to the Market the following Saturday, July 1st.

We anticipate having an array of our Summer Mixed Bouquets, hydrangea bouquets and perhaps our first sunflowers of the season.

I have included a few recent photos of our fields. Judy is visible in one of the photos. Another of the photos is from this morning and shows one of our rain gauges at just about 1.25 inches of (well needed) rain.

An observation from Farmhouse:
Our small farm is adjacent to a state park. We are surrounded by meadows, woodlands, wetlands and farmlands. During a typical spring we see loads of raptors; hawks, bald eagles, falcons, owls and vultures. This spring I noticed that only the vultures seemed to be about in their normal numbers.

Gone are the hawks that perch on utility wires and dead ash trees. Absent are the kestrel falcons that patrol the perennial rye covered seasonal waterways. Only seldom can be heard the sounds of owls during the night.
(Fortunately, the vulture's numbers seem not diminished. They perform a much valued service out here.)

One result of the decrease in the raptor's numbers is a marked increase in the number of rabbits in our yard and fields. They have caused a considerable amount of damage to flowers, culinary herbs and other ornamentals here at the farm.

I wonder if others in central Ohio have noticed a drop off in raptor numbers this year versus last year.

Anyway, we at Farmhouse Herbs and Flowers look forward to seeing you next week at the Worthington Farmers' Market (that's July 1st).

Hello Friends,

This is just a quick note from Judy and I here at Farmhouse Herbs and Flowers. We will not be at the Worthington Farmers' Market on Saturday (6/17). We hope to return to the Market by early July, perhaps sooner.
For the past few months we have been preparing for the current growing season. Our fields are looking pretty good and we are anticipating some respectable yields of heirloom flowers for Judy to transform into beautiful bouquets.
I have included some photos of what's been happening here at the farm over the past few months. The photos range from February 21st, the first time that I worked the field, to a day or so ago.
Please know that we miss being at the Market, presenting our flowers and seeing you. Stay alert, stay safe and stay positive until we meet up again. See you at the NW corner of High and New England soon.

As you most likely have surmised, Farmhouse Herbs and Flowers will not be answering the bell for this week's Worthington Farmers' Market or the Markets for the remainder of the season. We will truly miss all of our many customers and friends. We do plan on returning to the outdoor Market in 2023 (with even more varieties of flowers and some additional surprises).

Judy and I would like to thank each and every one of you who have purchased our botanical products this year. We appreciate your business. We want you to know that many of you have become much more than customers. You are our friends who we enjoy seeing and with whom we enjoy sharing our interests and lives. Please take care and know that we look forward to seeing you again.

I also want to acknowledge the contributions of my esteemed helper Max. He provides a lot of help on Saturdays. I think that we make a pretty good team.

Finally, I want to thank the Market Volunteers and Market Management Team (Christine and Karen) for all of the work that they do to make the Worthington Farmers' Market possible. It (the Market) is a gargantuan undertaking.

Having said all of that, I'll end this with some photos of one of my favorite Volunteers, Leslie, ringing the bell to open the Market. (That kid's got style!)

See 'ya next spring.

A Piece of the Farmhouse Herbs and Flowers Story:

Judy and I have been growing produce, culinary herbs and flowers commercially for over 40 years. Most of that time we focused, solely, on the wholesale market. In 2007 we began selling retail at area farmers' markets (especially the Worthington Farmers' Market). With almost alarming regularity I am asked two questions:
#1. Do you grow this? (To which the answer is, "Yes.") and
#2 How did you ever get into farming/growing since you grew up here in the city (the east side of Columbus, specifically)?

Well, while I did finish primary school and graduate from (Columbus East) high school here, my first 9 years were spent in Belmont County, Ohio. I spent most of my childhood in small town and rural Ohio. I spent HUGE amounts of time outdoors roaming the hills and dales of eastern Ohio. I got to spend time with my paternal grandparents with their vegetable garden and fruit trees. I also got to spend some time on a farm of a great uncle. The farm was located outside of Bedford, Virginia. The photos that accompany this post show me on Uncle Joe's farm riding a plow horse. I believe that the year was 1955. That's how I got into farming and the outdoors. I guess that it's in my roots.

Notice the "high tension" electrical tower in the background of the first photo. The power company exercised eminent domain to run the lines through the farm. Ironically, there was NO ELECTRICITY on the farm! Nighttime light was from kerosene lamps! (There's a whole 'nother story right there.)

(PS. I don't look too bad on that horse given that I'm just about to turn 5 years old; fairly good form.)

A Piece of the Farmhouse Herbs and Flowers Story:

Aerial view of our first farm; the first incarnation of Farmhouse Herbs and Flowers (back then we were Farmhouse Herbs and Vegetables).

We took possession of this wonderful old farmhouse on Fry Road in western Delaware county on this day back in 1979! This photo (probably from 1982) shows an early culinary herb and vegetable garden. Even back then we were totally organic. We were practitioners of methods pioneered by Robert Rodale and Ruth Stout. We were able to achieve outstanding yields with very modest inputs.

In the summer of 1980, we had a bumper crop of produce, especially culinary herbs. Chives, parsley, rosemary, dill, sage, oregano, basil, thyme, opal basil and mints, along with some European salad greens and summer squash, were in particular abundance. There were plenty of tomatoes and peppers, as well. We were up to our eyeballs in produce. We started giving it away. One of our friends who was an accomplished home chef said, "You should be selling this stuff." So, Judy prepared a "sampler" of our culinary herbs and some specialty vegetables and made our first "cold call."

It was our good fortune that led Judy to call upon, first, Ziggy's Continental and the Chef and Owner, Siegbert "Ziggy" Allespach. Ziggy loved the sampler. He was, literally, thrilled to see-feel-smell-taste really fresh herbs, local and organically grown and well presented. Ziggy's Continental became our first customer. We were on the road!

(It was an honor to know Ziggy and have him as a customer. He was an artist and a gentleman. He is missed. Ziggy's Continental was a landmark, pioneer gourmet restaurant in Columbus/Central Ohio.)

Summer is quickly coming to a close and fall is on the near horizon.

Here at the farm, the vibrant colors of the season are yielding to the approach of the autumn equinox. That means that there are a limited number of days left in the market season for Farmhouse Herbs and Flowers. Visit us at the Worthington Farmers' Market this coming Saturday, September 17th, from 8:00 a.m. through 12:00 Noon.

Regardless of the timing of this season's end, we plan on returning to the field and the market(s) next season. We certainly hope that you will join us, again, for a season of floral bounty featuring the beautiful and unique bouquets created by Judy. In spite of our advancing years, we do plan on expanding the variety of our floral and botanical offerings.

2023 will mark our 44th year of gardening and farming commercially! What began as "a mutant vegetable and culinary herb garden" has metamorphosized into a cut flower farm that brings beauty into the homes and lives of thousands of people each year.

Soon, the night will overtake the day and we will find ourselves spending more time indoors. As our time in the field lessens, I hope to finally begin telling the story of Farmhouse Herbs and Flowers in narrative and photos. Please check in from time to time and see what I have managed to post.

This will give you an idea of what to expect this Saturday from Farmhouse Herbs and Flowers at the Worthington Farmers' Market.

Judy will be creating lots of stunning summer bouquets for your enjoyment. We also expect to have a fair amount of beautiful, long stemmed sunflowers. Get there early for the best selection.

Here's something a little different for us. The photo is of a wonderful tropical bouquet constructed, on the spot, by Brad of Market Blooms at North Market.
Brad created this beauty in about 30 seconds, seriously. The team at Market Blooms are floral magicians. When you are near downtown, the Short North or Victorian Village visit them at the North Market.
Thanks Brad, Marty, Bob, Jen and the rest of the team for the arrangement.
(Oh, btw, no flowers from Farmhouse Herbs and Flowers were used in the arrangement.)

Here are some recent honeybee photos from one of our stands of sunflowers. It seems to be a pretty good year for our local bee population.

The honeybees are most likely from one of our neighbor's (Emily Calvert's) hives. Additionally, we have a strong population of "wild" orchard bees. The orchard bees will frequently sleep overnight in the sunflowers (sometimes 2 or 3 to a flower).

Of course, our small farm is pesticide free. The elimination of chemical based pesticides has allowed beneficial insects and microbes to flourish on our farm.

Today is sort of a special day here at Farmhouse Herbs and Flowers. Today I will cut (i.e., harvest) our first sunflowers of the season! And since it is such a special day I think that I will share a few more glimpses of our flower fields.

While the sunflowers we harvested today have already been sold, we will have more, freshly cut, on Saturday at the Worthington Farmers' Market.

On another note, it appears that there is a good population of orchard bees in our fields this year. Some of the photos show the bees at work in the sunflowers.

Enjoy.
