Another Weekend wraps up 📅

Our big project Thursday and Friday was getting the mobile sheep pen moved up to the new pasture. Once we got it assembled, we loaded Enoch 🐏 and a feeder lamb up and they’ll stay there for a few months. This allows our ewes to have a break since they all just lambed.

Saturday, after sorting some cows, we worked on the fencing at the new pasture. We ran a hot wire on one leg and got the rest laid out to start our rotational grazing on the new land in (hopefully) a couple of weeks. 🥶 🐮 🐑

Of course there was lots of kitchen activity involved as I cooked and canned lamb broth for the first time and made some delicious liver pâté 🤤

The weekend wouldn’t be complete without Sunday worship to feed us through the next week ☀️ 🌱

Just another morning with Esther the bottle calf

We keep her up when it’s rainy and cold because she’s so young and tiny - and doesn’t have her momma.

She’s use to the routine now and knows we mean food so she’s eager to follow. It makes it much easier getting her to her spot so she can enjoy the sunshine and fresh air on pretty days

Hello, we’re the Morrison’s!

It’s been awhile since we introduced ourselves.

We’re Josh and Kiley and along with our two boys, Augustus and Atticus - We’re the proud owners and operators of Earnest Roots Farm located in Ashville, Alabama.

We started getting serious about this way of life in 2017 and had so many questions about our food system and what we were eating. Most questions that the general public couldn’t even answer.

We have decided to be apart of a food movement that connects the farmer back to the consumer. “Know your Farmer, Know your Food”

This simple phrase has never been more practical or achievable. We at Earnest Roots Farm would like to be your farmer and provide nutrient dense food for you and your family!

We currently offer pasture raised pork and chicken (soy free options) and grass fed beef and lamb.

We hope you join us for the ride!

Oh, I see Him

You know spring is knocking on the door when things get this busy around here. From hatching chicks to bottle feeding calves, we’re just about in the thick of it (all we need are the pigs and meat birds coming soon)

Sunday, Josh found a set of twin calves and one was nose deep in a mud pit. The Momma took her sister but, even after cleaning this heifer up and trying to get momma to take her, it didn’t work. Josh and dad tubed her with some of Clora’s colostrum and the next morning we brought her down. She finally started taking a bottle yesterday (we were still tubing her) and she seems more lively everyday 🤞🏼

Our first lambs of the year were born yesterday and we had twins! They are beautiful ❤️ More should be dropping in the coming days.

We’re trying to grow our laying hens again after suffering a huge predator attack before we moved. Monday we had a very successful batch with 18/21 hatching. They are doing great and we are prepping for our second batch to hatch next week.

In our Bible study this morning, the question was asked “can you see God” to which Augustus replied “yes” It was a moment to teach what all we can see God in - The formation of a chick from an egg, a newborn calf and lambs frolicking about the field with their momma.

The trees reaching up to Him, the flowers reaching to Him, the grass growing - they all grow to Him. The birds sing His praises. His little reply was this “but the weeds mommy, they grow to Him too” Absolutely they do. Even those need the light, baby. (To which opened up a discussion on our fallen world - oh the beauty of His word and how we can use it to our everyday life!) Even the ugliest, darkest of things know they need light to thrive and survive.

We’re all looking for something and if we’d just turn to His light, oh how we can be changed.

Oh, Yes I see Him. But I’m forever thankful I feel Him and KNOW Him. To God be the Glory.

I received a grant to attend this past years APPPA conference. For that grant I had to write about my experience there. To my surprise when I was reading this months article I had to do a double take when I saw my name. At first glance I was like, Wow there’s another Josh Morrison in APPPA. I got to meet this guy. Then I got to reading and realized it was me 🤣. You can now add a writer to the many hats that have donned on this head. Will this be the start of something?

If you’d like to read it then join . Theres a wealth of information and great people in this group. There’s something for everyone whether you have 1 chicken or 100,000 +. Heck I talked to someone who didn’t have a single chicken this past conference. They were there to learn.

Water, golf, and concrete

Another weekend in the books as we wind down on the last weekend of February.

Saturday morning, the gang was able to get a few posts put in the ground and set in concrete - they were in low spots that required it. It spit rain all morning and we decided to shift gears from fence and focus on some electrical work we needed to complete.

The new chicken shelter we’re building requires welding so we got everything squared away for a welding plug.

The gravity water tower made it’s way next to the brooder and we’re in the process of getting that filled and hooked back up for the first batch of meat birds that’ll be here in 2 weeks!

Two little farmers had fun exploring while 👩🏻‍🌾 worked on the electric fence and then the eggs were collected in the most caring way 🥚

Just a few short weeks and we’ll have our first batch of meat birds for the 2023 season!

The birds are 3 days old when we receive them and they go straight to the brooder for the heat they need for the first couple of weeks.

From there, they go to pasture to live their best lives: chasing bugs, soaking up sun, breathing fresh air, scratching in the dirt, and just being a chicken.

They fertilize our pastures as they’re rotated daily to fresh grasses and the shavings/manure from the brooder is spread over the pasture as well.

Not only can you taste the pasture raised difference in these guys, but they play a key part in regenerating the farm as well.

We’ll be fully back in stock in May, but check out all the options we have in the online store!

When we moved, we had to have a way of keeping our sheep in.

The pastures we were using were only built to hold cows, with barbed wire. When it came time to wean our meat lambs, we had to come up with a solution and this mobile sheep pen was just the trick.

Completely mobile, with water and shade and (relatively) easy to move by hand.

You can catch more details in our YouTube video about it (it’s our most watched to date!)

This farm life is amazing and we’re forever grateful God has allowed us to farm.

But my ultimate goal in this life is to be in His will and do what He’d have me to do. As the cow gets milk, the chickens get fed, the pigs get rotated, the cows hauled hay, the children get taught; May it all be for His honor and glory.

The burdens we carry are heavy at times, but oh to have a savior whose feet we can lay it all at. And I’m thankful for the happiness He bestows in me - because of Him I can face tomorrow.

Our beef is completely family run from the time the calf hits the ground.

Born at Byram Cattle Co., my mom and dad’s farm. From there, we take over at weaning.

No antibiotics, no steroids. Just the good stuff - Grass, water, and grain free.

Flavorsome & delicious, with quality as our top priority, there’s a reason it doesn’t stay in stock long.

But don’t worry, we’ll be back in stock in time for all your summer grilling

We’re not sure what the weather is thinking today, but we sure are reminiscing on the past few warm days we’ve had 🌸

02/17/2023

Yeah, we’re totally going to go there.

And while we’re at it, homesteaders across the country (and beyond) really need to understand and be aware of the crops and livestock that are coming out of areas affected by this. A nuclear bomb basically just went off. This is not ok. It DOES affect your food. It DOES affect your livestock. It DOES affect the land and soil and waterways.

Get your house in order. Grow your own food. And now, make sure you’re prepared if something like this happens in your area!

Most importantly, stop sweeping this story under the rug! Share share share!

🥚 ERF IS OFFICIALLY BACK IN EGGS! 🥚

We purchased some hens ready to go from Resaca, where we get our feed, and we're excited about the jump start with hens.

These girls sure are enjoying the pasture life!

(Eggs will be available for Home Delivery and Rainbow City City Hall. We can't offer eggs at our drop locations as this is a pickup at your convenience option. However, we are always willing to work with our customers so if you pickup at one of our drop locations and need eggs, let us know. If you're available to meet when we make the drops, then we'd be happy to add eggs to your order!)

Mud riding and dirt work

Friday was an exciting day as we started another phase on the Farm Building.

The floor was prepped and leveled to prepare for concrete and the drains were put in that will allow the water to flow out during processing.

Next step is plumbing then we’ll be at the concrete phase.

The morning started out muddy for me and the boys when I decided to cut through the marsh of our front yard and sunk down to the fender immediately 🙈 BUT the tractor and help from dad and Josh got it out that evening 😁

The fruit trees are blooming 🌸 and we’re holding on to the hope of warmer, drier (but not too dry) days ahead.

We ended the weekend with some fantastic home cooked meals and goodies, as usual

Chickens and Feed 🐔 🌾

Josh got an early start this morning and headed to for the first feed run of the year. The boys and I headed out to tend to Clora and Ernie and feed and water the laying chicks in the brooder. We threw 22 more eggs into the new incubator, because Chickens, and anxiously await as the first set is scheduled to hatch on Wednesday.

We picked up 30 laying hens, because chickens, from our friends at Resaca, and got them settled into their shelter. This is big news - we’ll have eggs back in stock soon!

After a few business errands, we ended the evening with getting the layer nets set up and lit up.

Who else can feel spring coming?

We spent most of the day moving our old layer shelter from the beef land to the new land. We originally thought we were going to have to cut the shelter into sections, making it easier to lift with the tractor.

We gave it a shot and we were able to wrap some large straps around the middle, then hook the chain to the straps and left it with the hay spear on the tractor. We got it loaded up, hauled over and into place!

The day was wrapped up with more fence work for the guys and deliveries to Trussville for 👩🏻‍🌾

Beautiful day and we got a lot done, one step closer to the season ahead!

‼️Missing Dogs‼️
Good morning! My name is Maria St. James and I was wondering if you could help with circulating this to near by businesses, your local family and friends. I'd greatly appreciate it! God bless!
hey y'all, just wondering, do you know of anyone who is selling Alabama grown tomatoes? Good ones ;) ? thanks in advance
Egg rolls made with Earnest Roots Farm ground pork. They were delicious!
These days when I plop down on the couch to rest I look up on the mantle at a family portrait. A little over 3 1/2 years ago we removed a flat screen TV from that spot and all of our TVs went into a closet. You see, we made a decision back then to step away from main stream America and out of the realm of normalcy. It was hard at first breaking the long instilled habit of turning the TV on, grabbing that plate of food and sitting on the couch for hours on end after a day of work. The result of this decision has been well worth it. We have more family time now like, sitting at the table for dinner, game nights, or an occasional movie night on the labtop. We started modern homesteading to try and grow a majority of the food we consume. That turned into a farm business, Earnest Roots Farm. We are outside a lot. Our son plays in the dirt, climbs trees, gets chased by a goose, and just experiences life without an iPhone in his face. It feels like an episode of The Andy Griffith show around here at times. We now know our neighbors by name, can lend a helping hand, and we barter occasionally. I, Josh, found a knack for cooking other than putting BBQ sauce on everything. O yea, did I mention we are outside like a lot?

This choice isn’t for most, but if made then you won’t regret it. Get back to an old way life style. Don’t just listen to those old time stories grandma and grandpa told reminiscing of a simpler time where they walked up hill both ways to school, in the snow, while caring a cane pole, just after milking the cow in the rain. Live it.

Only Alabamians will understand the sudden change in weather.
Just a chilling........
