The flocks were separated a few days ago, so we will set eggs around the 21st of March.

Chickens do not like change. I just put fresh straw in the nest boxes, and you would have thought the world was coming to an end.

We have a few eggs for sale if you need some--cartons of dark brown and blue. Also some purebred black Ameraucana and some Olive Egger hatching eggs if you're looking to fill your 'bator.

The new chicks are here! So excited to begin the next phase of Red Wicket Farm. I love Ameraucanas, and the Black and Lavender chicks we received are lovely. Looking forward to offering purebred Ameraucana hatching eggs (and maybe even some chicks) this fall.

The broody mama's eggs hatched this weekend. She only hatched three of the 10 eggs--I can only figure that it was just too cold (I tried to tell her so, but she was determined). I tried to get a photo of the chicks this morning, but that's one intense Mama--I was holding her under my arm to take the photo, but she bit me and jumped back down to her chicks.

Cold, cold, cold! While it doesn't seem like ideal weather to raise chicks, we have one very silly hen that is intent on brooding a clutch. I tried to talk her out of it, but finally gave in. She's now sitting on 10 eggs, in the broody box, in the barn to try to keep her warm. I'll feel better about her once the chicks hatch and she can be back in the hen house keeping warm with the rest of the flock.

We haven't been around much lately, because we sold off most of the layers (all but 10) and stopped selling eggs. It was just too much work for too little reward.

In April, we will receive some lovely little purebred black and lavender Ameraucana chicks. Hopefully some of these little fluffballs will grow up to be show-worthy beauties! I'll post some photos when they arrive.

In the meantime, we still have seven hens and three roosters. Our ladies are laying very well despite the weather, and we always have extra eggs. If you will be near Slate Run Metropark and would like to buy some eggs, give me a call!

Just put the incubator into "lockdown--" which is the last three days of incubation where you stop turning eggs, raise the humidity in the 'bator to 80%, and DON'T OPEN THE DOOR NO MATTER WHAT (because that will drop the humidity and temperature and potentially kill chicks).

I really hate these three days. I am not a patient person.
