Get ready for another agriculture adventure from the comfort of your home! Today, July 15th at 5 PM, we will be visiting the Ten Mile Creek Nursery, in Hartford, AL. It is dedicated to commercial large-scale lotus production which is a very unique operation! To view the virtual farm tour (VFT), please subscribe to the Alabama Farmer Connection on Facebook and accept the simple rules to complete the sign-up process. This is a peer-to-peer social network group for beginning and mentor farmers across AL.

VFTs are made possible by the hard work of Harli Willis (Alabama Beginning Farmer Program Assistant). Major support for virtual events is provided by the USDA-NIFA BFRD (Phases 1 & 2), SARE Research & Education/PDP, and ADAI Specialty Crops Block Grant Programs. Thanks to the farmers, educators, and everyone involved for sharing information and providing inspiration!

Did you miss any of the previous four VFTs in 2021? Then simply go the commercial horticulture archive page - click https://www.aces.edu/blog/topics/farming/2021-digital-resources-for-farmers/ and watch the recordings! All VFTs from 2020 are also archived separately on www.alabamabeginningfarmer.com. Please use the Farming Basics App for your IPM information/communication needs and kindly share this resource with producers in your area.

ATTENTION SENIORS!
Apply NOW for 2021 Farmers Market Vouchers

Seniors age 60 or older are encouraged to apply for a benefit administered by the Alabama Farmers Market Authority to provide coupons to low income seniors. Each qualifying senior who is approved will receive vouchers worth $30 that can be used to purchase eligible foods (fresh fruits, vegetables, honey, and herbs) from farmers that grow them and are selling them directly to you at local farmers markets and roadside stands.

Vouchers can be redeemed at any state certified Farmers Market, Farm-stand, and U-pick operations. To view a list by county, please visit http:/agi.alabama.gov/docs/fma/RedemptionSites. Don’t forget, the St. Clair County Farmers Market in Pell City is an approved market and will open later this year.

Eligibility is based on income. The recipient’s gross household income must not exceed the following limits: $1,756 for a household of one; $2,371 for a household of two; $2,987 for a household of three; $3,604 for a household of four; $4,219 for a household of five; and $4,835 for a household of six. Seniors must re-apply each year for this program because vouchers expire every year and they must be used in the year issued. Before applying, seniors should total up their monthly income for the household. Documentation is not required when applying.

Seniors must apply online by visiting http://fma.alabama.gov. If you do not have access to the internet we can help! Please stop by the St. Clair County Extension Office, located in the St. Clair County Courthouse (lower level) in Pell City, or contact us at (205) 338-9416.

The application only takes a few minutes to complete and just a few details such as name, address, phone number, last four of social security number, date of birth, number of people living in household and gross monthly income before taxes are needed. Completing an application does not guarantee receipt of Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits due to the fact that funds are limited. No person is “entitled” to Senior Farmers Market Nutrition program checks. Seniors are encouraged to apply soon. For more information about the program, please contact the Alabama Farmers Market Authority in Montgomery by calling their toll free number, 1-877-774-9519 or email [email protected].

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) sponsors the Master Gardener Program which trains home gardeners in horticulture so they may volunteer service to civic, educational and community projects. For many people, becoming a Master Gardener is a “bucket list” item because it allows them to take their lifelong interest in gardening and take it up a notch for the benefit of others.

As Benjamin Franklin wrote, “out of adversity comes opportunity.” Since March, ACES professionals have been collaborating on the best ways to keep the Master Gardener program productive and enriching. Certified Master Gardener volunteers have been offered almost daily online educational content. Master Gardener volunteers have also taken on charitable and volunteer projects in new ways by participating in group projects through online collaboration or steering vegetable contributions from individual home gardens directly to local food banks. The 2020 St. Clair County Master Gardener class of interns will be one of the first to benefit from the educational and technological innovations ACES has undertaken as a result of the pandemic.

Classes will be held weekly on Wednesdays beginning August 26th and continuing through November 18th. Morning sessions will be taught by Auburn professors and expert Extension Agents in a hybrid format. Master Gardener interns will be able to choose between watching courses locally in a socially distanced classroom OR through home internet access via Zoom. The morning sessions cover the core subjects in the Master Gardener Handbook such as soils, botany, propagation and landscape design. This will be the first time Master Gardener interns will be enjoying the same lectures simultaneously across the state. Afternoon sessions will be interactive and hands-on under the leadership of Bethany O’Rear, Regional Extension Agent. If state and county guidelines permit, there will be in-person instruction but in any event —whether in-person or remotely—there will be lots of practical skills training, fun quizzes and individual and group homework and presentations. It covers all the same bases of prior year’s classes but with special enhancements. If you have friends who have taken the Master Gardener class in the past they may be jealous of this year’s agenda!

Alabama Smart Yards - Alabama Extension

Alabama Smart Yards - Alabama Extension

A few questions are coming in about low temperatures in North Alabama this weekend.
Vegetables that we typically plant in the warm –season such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers thrive in soil temperatures above 65 degrees. Many will not grow well or produce fruit until air temperatures are consistently above 55 to 60 degrees at night. Some damage may occur when air temperatures dip into the low to mid 30s. You may not receive plant damage, but the low temperatures will not help with plant growth. If you anticipate low temperatures:
- Use an organic mulch (about 2 to 3 inches) to retain heat
- Water well – to a depth of at least 6 inches (looks like rain is brewing so that will help)

- Cover plants – use a cover cloth or a bed sheet. Use a support system to keep cover from crushing plants

Plants will recover from a small amount of damage. Check plants in the days to come for any frost damage. Wait to plant veggies like okra and sweet potatoes until the ground warms and air temperatures are higher.
