Monday Farm Update!
We've been a bit quiet on Facebook lately, but have been very busy on the farm. The last of the incubators were finally turned off over the weekend (for now!) until emu chick season this coming fall/winter.
We've begun construction on our 4th waterfowl aviary!!! This one will be approximately 15,000 sq ft and will be 155' x 110' with an L shape on one of the short sides. The pond is approximately 40' x 60' and 6 ft deep. We are enclosing the existing carport in this aviary and will eventually frame the carport in so that we can have heat in the carport for the more sensitive species we will be keeping in this aviary. Some of our existing waterfowl and pheasants will be moved to this aviary once it's completed. Follow along as we'll be posting updates of our progress of the aviary build. Some of the species we'll be keeping in this aviary will be: Red Breasted Geese, Magpie Geese, West Indian Whistling Tree Ducks, Hooded Mergansers, Baikal Teal, Himalayan Monal Pheasants as well as some new wish list additions we hope to obtain in the fall!
...and yes, some of you may have noticed that there is a new pond at the bottom of our goat pasture!!! This area was completely covered in rocks and boulders and was unusable except for our goats to graze. We decided a pond and a dock would be a much better use of this space! Maridel & Sarge (our Mute breeder swans will be moved to this pond once it's filled). Now we just need Mother Nature to bring on the rain as we are desperately needing some more rain and are currently in a drought. Our Livestock Guardian dogs are able to patrol this entire space and pasture, so we have virtually eliminated any predators with the dogs doing an absolutely excellent job of guarding the birds and our property.
Stay tuned for future updates...
