COCCIDIOSIS IN CHICKENS: CAUSES, SYMPTOMS, PREVENTION, TREATMENT, AND HERBAL REMEDIES
Coccidiosis is a highly contagious parasitic disease caused by Eimeria species, affecting the intestinal tract of chickens. If left untreated, it can lead to severe health issues and even death in young or weak birds.
🛑Causes of infection include ingestion of contaminated f***s, poor sanitation, overcrowding, and stress-induced weakened immunity. Chickens consuming infected droppings easily spread the disease within the flock.
🛑Symptoms often include bloody or watery diarrhea, weight loss, lethargy, pale comb and wattles, reduced egg production, and general weakness. In severe cases, dehydration and death can occur without intervention.
🛑Preventative measures focus on maintaining a clean and dry coop environment, providing fresh and uncontaminated water, avoiding overcrowding, supplementing probiotics for gut health, and quarantining new birds before introducing them to the flock. Pasture rotation also helps break the parasite cycle.
🛑Treatment includes administering anticoccidial medications such as Amprolium or sulfa-based drugs. Providing electrolytes, vitamins, and plenty of water aids recovery. Proper hydration and nutritional support are essential for infected birds.
🛑Herbal remedies like apple cider vinegar help maintain gut health, while garlic and oregano provide natural antimicrobial properties. Chamomile and thyme are known for their antibacterial effects, and diatomaceous earth may assist in parasite control.
Managing coccidiosis requires vigilance and early intervention to prevent outbreaks.
