Today is a sad day…not a horrible day, but sad all the same. We have closed down our dahlias for this season. Many of you likely noticed we didn’t have a great bloom season this year, we didn’t have a great harvest season either.
Despite the challenges we were thrown, we learned and will implement many changes over the cool season to build back stronger next year. With the upcoming hurricane we made an executive decision to pull them instead of allowing them to Water log. I will stand behind my decision fully, this was in their best interest. We will be pitting up the tiny tubers and root balls and overwintering them in our plant motel, we will be taking cuttings and early storing the rest.
Between weather fluctuations, multiple bug blooms (like way more than usual) combined with a very unusual wet season and then a very VERY late hot spell that was insufferable….we were doing poorly. Add Bambi and bunnies to the mix and we got skunked (without the stinky Pepe le pew). Zinnias were demolished before we really got any blooms, dahlias destroyed time and time again. Their tubers show the stress they were under.
