It's amazing how much things have changed over the years.

This old flyer from 1918 encouraged every family to keep a few hens in the backyard. Raising poultry wasn't seen as unusual, it was considered practical, responsible, and even patriotic. Families were encouraged to be more self-sufficient, produce their own food, and contribute to their communities.

Fast forward to today, and in many places, keeping a small flock of chickens requires permits, zoning approvals, HOA battles, or isn't allowed at all. What was once encouraged has, in some cases, become heavily regulated.

Whether you agree with every regulation or not, it's hard not to notice how much has changed. A century ago, self-reliance was actively promoted.

Today, it often feels like there are more hurdles than opportunities for those who simply want to provide for themselves and their families.

Looking back at pieces of history like this really makes you wonder what we've gained—and what we've lost—along the way.

Everybody talks about how much they care about conservation.

Everybody talks about saving endangered species.

Everybody talks about standing up when something isn't right.

Now's your chance to prove it.

It takes less than two minutes to sign these petitions, but the impact could last a lifetime for one of the world's most iconic parrots and animal transport as we know it.

I'm challenging every bird keeper, conservationist, wildlife enthusiast, and supporter of responsible aviculture to stop scrolling and take action.

If you've already signed, share the last two posts made on the Dinky Creek page. If you haven't, what are you waiting for?

Your voice matters. Use it.

🚨 URGENT: Support Needed for the Spix's Macaw Conservation Program 🚨

I am asking everyone who cares about conservation, aviculture, endangered species, and wildlife preservation to take a few moments to learn about the ongoing situation involving the Spix's Macaw recovery program in Brazil.

According to reports from supporters and stakeholders involved with the project, birds associated with one of the world's most significant conservation success stories have been seized, and concerns have been raised regarding the potential euthanasia of individuals that have played a critical role in the species' recovery.

The Spix's Macaw was once declared extinct in the wild. Through decades of dedication, collaboration, research, and conservation breeding, this iconic species was given a second chance. The work accomplished through this program represents far more than the recovery of a single bird—it stands as a symbol of what is possible when conservation efforts are supported and protected.

Regardless of where you stand on the circumstances surrounding this case, transparency, science-based decision making, and the preservation of decades of conservation work should be priorities for everyone involved.

Please take a moment to review the information available, sign the petition if you feel compelled to do so, and share it with others who care about the future of wildlife conservation.

The conservation community has a responsibility to make its voice heard when the future of a species hangs in the balance.

🚨A challenge for everyone reading this: 🚨

If you're upset about what's happening with the Spix's Macaw project...
If you're concerned about H.R. 7371 and what it could mean for the future of animal transportation...
If you care about aviculture, conservation, agriculture, rare species, or your rights as a lawful breeder...

What are you actually doing about it?

Because a comment on some celebrity’s post takes 10 seconds. Sharing a meme takes 5. But making your voice heard where it matters? That's where most people disappear.

The truth is, we are watching some of the most important issues facing animal keepers, breeders, and conservationists unfold in real time. Today it's gamefowl. Today it's Spix's Macaws. Tomorrow it could be pheasants, parrots, waterfowl, softbills, livestock, or any other species that depends on dedicated people to preserve them.

Everyone wants the benefits of conservation. Everyone loves seeing species recovered, protected, and thriving. But conservation doesn't happen by accident. It happens because people are willing to stand up, get involved, and defend the programs, breeders, and organizations doing the work.

So here's the question:

Will you just watch from the sidelines and hope someone else fights these battles?

Or will you take five minutes, educate yourself, sign a petition, contact your representatives, support the organizations involved, and become part of the solution?

The future of aviculture won't be decided by the people who care the most.

It will be decided by the people who actually show up.

What side are you on?

H.R. 7371 represents a troubling expansion of federal authority into lawful animal commerce under the guise of transportation policy.

One side of aviculture nobody talks about enough is the losses.

Just recently, we got our first fertile Guinea Turaco (Persa persa) egg of the season. While resetting an incubator, I thought I completed the process. Turns out I didn’t, and the incubator shut off. I’m pretty sure that egg is no longer viable. That one stings. I’m sure there are a few people who will quietly revel in that, and that’s fine.

The reality is, this hobby is full of opportunities for things to go wrong. One missed detail can undo weeks or months of work. That’s just part of it.

If you can’t take an L, learn from it, and keep it pushing, aviculture probably isn’t for you. The wins are incredible, but they’re built on a whole lot of lessons nobody posts about.

Sometimes you’ve got to slow down to speed up.

2026 is shaping up to be the Year of the Roul-Roul at Dinky Creek. 🐦🔥

Last year we found some success with this incredible little species, but this season we’re pushing ourselves even harder. Every year we learn something new, make small improvements, and try to provide our birds with the best possible environment to thrive.

The goal? Hatch and raise more healthy Roul-Roul chicks than ever before.

These birds may be small, but they have become one of my favorite species on the farm. Watching tiny eggs turn into thriving young birds never gets old.

We’re still early in the season, but things are looking promising. Here’s to a record year and continuing to improve one hatch at a time.

How many Roul-Roul chicks do you think we’ll raise this year? 👇🐥
