If the bottle you want is signed by a celebrity instead of literally anyone that has anything to do with the production of the spirit in that bottle, you are wrong.

Jeptha Creed Bottled-in-Bond! I like a wheater, but this BiB is delicious. Comprised of 75% Bloody Butcher corn, 20% malted rye, and 5% malted barley, this is going down as one of my all-time favorite BiB for under $50.

Nose - caramel, crème brûlée, all those lovely brown notes you get from bourbon, but with the spiced apple pie and cranberry sauce that malted rye yields.

Palate - caramel carries through, but it isn’t dominant. There’s a grassiness that I like which transitions softly into lemon pith mid-palate, oak, and vanilla cream.

Finish - for 50% abv, it’s silky smooth. Some black-pepper ginger snap sort of weaves its way in and out. It goes on for days.

8.5/10 for me. Absolutely superb.

Get you some at Max's Bottle Shop!

The Four Grain Mash Bill from Jeptha Creed is perfect for anyone that’s looking for a new favourite under $50.

It’s made up of 70% estate-grown Bloody Butcher corn, which accounts for the not-insignificant presence of ripe red fruit and a bright nuttiness on the nose. The other grains are malted rye, malted wheat, and malted barley (malted everything!!!), and we all know how I feel about malt. Absolutely packed with flavour, and at a quite manageable 98°, it’s a smashing grab at $44.99!

Nose - Brown sugar syrup, candied red berries, a beautiful florality, and a touch of musty barn (in a good way!).

Palate - higher-palate baking spices like clove and nutmeg, toasted tree nuts, apple pie, and vanilla dominating through to the finish.

Finish - long, but moreish still. Not so long that it leaves you gagging. And of course lingering vanilla bean and spice.

I gave it a 6.5/10 when I first tried it. Again, for under $50? You could do waaayyyyy worse. Come try it for yourself at Max's Bottle Shop!

Starting this quarter I’m going to TRY and post about something I highly recommend from the shop at least three times a week.

Gonna start off with what has recently become one of my favorite bourbons for the money, and that’s Jeptha Creed out of Shelbyville, KY.

I’m a sucker for a farm distillery, and these guys (gals, actually!) are no exception. They muck about with heirloom corn varietals which is aces in my book, and they malt absolutely everything in sight, which is a fantastic bonus. The resulting flavors in all of their releases are bursts of ripe red and green fruit, baking spices, prairie grasses, and floral notes that absolutely hit the spot for me as far as whiskies go. More to follow on each individual dram as the week goes on. If you want to try them for yourself before you buy, come see me at Max's Bottle Shop Wednesday thru Saturday in the afternoons!
