Ten years ago, I wanted to know more about the history of a rare hog breed I was raising. For five years, I conducted interviews of those who raised Guinea Hogs in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and up to 2018. I interviewed the major players around 2004-2006 who helped start the American Guinea Hog Association. I pieced together these interviews and findings with help from The Livestock Conservancy's archives to create a compelling story of these unique animals, their place in southern history, and the importance of conservation.

On March 15, I celebrate the fifth anniversary of my book release! It has been a steady seller for all five years. I am happy to get this information into the mainstream and that I exceeded the success of a typical self-publisher. Please celebrate with me by checking out the softcover version of my book! These will be autographed and include award stickers on the cover. They are discounted 44% and Media Mail shipping with tracking is only $4.25 (total cost is $18). While supplies last or until April 15th.

Our Story

I am Cathy R. Payne, a retired teacher of special education and reading, now living in Athens, Georgia. For 8 years after retirement, I operated an 11 acre family farm in Northeast Georgia near the Broad River. In late 2009, my husband and I decided to be more than just consumers of nutritious, local, clean, humanely raised food. We sought out some land and left Atlanta for agricultural Elbert County.

In addition to raising rare breeds of meat rabbits and Gulf Coast sheep, we were home to a diverse herd of breeding American Guinea hogs, a Southern lard hog and “America’s Favorite Homestead Hog.” This breed has a fascinating history that is worthy of its own book or series of books. Cathy will be writing and self-publishing them in 2019-2024. The first book’s working title is Guinea Hogs Lost and Found: The Amazing Grace of Breed Conservation. Contact Cathy at [email protected].

Cathy sold her Guinea hog herd in April of 2018 and sold the farm in July of 2018 so that she could be closer to family, leave home for more than 12 hours, and devote time to getting her books published to assist future breeders and consumers. Her website is www.guineahogbooks.com. You can email Cathy at [email protected].
