“Visitors to the farm come in all shapes and sizes!

Last week a group of students from Athens Montessori had a field trip out to the farm to see our farmers in action and learn all about where their local food comes from! Dozens of little feet pitter pattered around the fields as we showed them what we do out here every day. Who knows, maybe there were some future farmers in the group!! Our super-special, Diamond Hill Farm farmer-made coloring pages were a hit, too! If you’d like to print one out for a kiddo in your life… or if you’re an adult who loves to color and learn about our farm because we fully support that… head to our website (click today’s blog post) and print out your very own! :-)

We also had a different kind of visitor recently, fortunately not at the same time as the kiddos 😂 ... a rather LARGE snapping turtle unexpectedly decided to come check out what the heck those weird humans are always doin’ in that big old field. Luckily, we had some brave farmers willing to lend a hand and help this prehistoric gentleman find his way back to the swamp. Thanks for stopping by, buddy!“

The autumn is showing its splendor! Bright flavorful fennel is coming out of the fields :-) Crunchy, licorice-y, and with some lovely sweet notes, it’s perfect for a salad (check out our baby lettuce mix in slide 5&6 😉) or get cozy and roast it up in the oven with fish or other veggies. Hope to see you at market this weekend :~) the first stop for eatin’ good all week. Slide 2 has your full harvest!

With not even a hint of frost on the horizon, we’re soaking in all of these beautiful flowers for as long as we can! We have summery bunches and fall mixes to help you beckon whatever season of beauty inspires you, tonight at Creature Comforts Athens :-) the weather is dang near perfect, so come out and see us! We’ll be set up from 5-8pm with everything thats good ✨

do you ever see a vegetable so beautiful it makes you emotional???? That’s how we’re feelin’ over here about these gorgeous CARROTS!!!!! Better get to the market early, they’re in very limited supply this weekend. But we have sooooooo many planted and growing that we’ll be swimming in carrots in no time at all. Swipe for some carrot washin’, some carrot modelin’, a ✨before✨ photo, and at the very end the cutest carrot we ever did see. We missed y’all BIG TIME last weekend, can’t wait to catch up over some fresh veggies 🩷🥕👩‍🌾

We thought yall could use some more daikon-tent (“daikon content”, get it???? aren’t we clever??? please laugh 🙏 ). BUT FOR REAL, these beautiful radishes deserve the love! We know you’re dying to get your hands on these technicolor roots after the weekend markets were rained out, so head on down to Creature Comforts Athens tonight from 5-8pm and go nuts !! The weather is giving us one last taste of summer so go soak it all in ☀️🕶️🍻

Hello party people! This storm sure looks big huh! As for Saturday markets, they’re a wash ~ Athens Farmers Market 🌞 and Peachtree Road Farmers Market are cancelled, and we won’t be at Freedom Farmers Market, but the storm is looking like it’ll pass by Sunday and we’ll be at Grant Park from 9-1. We sure hope you’ll come out to buy some veggies and flowers from us on Sunday!! It’s one of the risks we have to accept as farmers, that the weather can dictate so much of our income. But it sure stinks when it happens! Even if we usually see you at one of our other markets, if you’re able to come out to Grant Park on Sunday to support us, it would mean the world to us! We have a TON of beautiful veggies, gorgeous flowers, and plump melons waiting to go home with their special someone. Hope to see you there 👨‍🌾

The dahlias have been feeling happier with these cool evenings :-) If you’re a dahlia lover you better get on down to our markets this weekend! It might not feel like it now, but first frost isn’t too far off on the horizon. Revel in all the blooms while they are here! Our full market offerings are on slide 2 (heyyyy shoutout new fall design!) and we hope to see you this weekend!!

Did you know? The Wednesday evening market is low key the cutest most chill market we go to!! Theres always a band with live music, an abundance of local b**r (and cocktails and mocktails and more), and the sweetest people in all of Athens :’) if you’ve never been out, this is pretty much the perfect time of year to try it out. We’re set up 5-8pm and every drink you buy from Creature Comforts Athens gets you a free $1 off token that you can use at our booth or with any other vendor! As always, SNAP is DOUBLED at the information booth. Come see for yourself that it’s just the sweetest ❤️

“A big fall milestone happened on the farm this past week: our ranunculus corms have officially been started!!!!

This is one of those tasks that requires many hands, even more soil, and a crazy amount of repetition. By the end of one very long day, our crew potted up 7,000 ranunculus corms and tucked them into the cooler, where they’re beginning their slow journey toward becoming some of our most anticipated spring flowers.
That journey starts with something that looks like freaky lil clusters of shriveled-up fingers. Or miniature dried octopuses. Or some strange little creature you might find in the deep sea. They certainly do not look like something capable of producing layer upon layer of silky, delicate petals a handful of months from now. But that’s what makes them so fun!!

Before potting, we give the corms a nice long soak in water. Over the course of a few hours, those dry little fingers plump up as they rehydrate and come to life.
Then we divide and conquer. Some corms are planted individually into cell trays, while others are spread across shallow flats and covered completely with soil. Tray by tray, flat by flat, the stacks begin to grow until what started as a pile of strange little dried corms has become a VERY large and VERY heavy collection of future flowers.

From there, into the cooler they go! Ranunculus benefit from spending their first few weeks growing in cool controlled conditions. During this period, the corms begin developing roots and waking up before they ever make it out to the greenhouse. Giving them this head start helps us establish strong plants that will be ready to take off once they’re planted.

For now, though, they’re quietly doing their thing in the dark while the rest of us are enjoying this fall sunshine 🌞❤️❤️”
