It is Christmas Eve and the reindeer fly tonight. Kids have to be in bed early and Santa's snack has to be set out. One of my customers said they are leaving some meatloaf and vodka for Santa. They believe he will appreciate it after all of the traditional cookies and milk he'll be getting from others. That got me to thinking. So I'm leaving him some American Chop Suey (made earlier tonight) with garlic bread along with a pot of strong, hot coffee. I think he'll really like that. He'll need it, too, after he visits my customer.

In just a few days it will be Christmas. Can you believe that? One minute pumpkins are all around, the next minute houses are glittering with Christmas lights all the way home from work. I am enjoying everyone else's lights and trees in their windows because I won't be putting any up this year. Not because I don't love Christmas, because I do. It's because my living room is still filled with moving boxes/plastic tubs and there's no place to put anything. I have a few tubs filled with paperback books (yes, I am a read-aholic). I took some of those tubs and put them in my bedroom, intending to empty them out and put their books on the bookshelf in there. But I don't like where the bookshelf is, so I've been putting it off. If I put that bookshelf on another wall, though, it will make the room look "off". It really ought to go in the living room but I can't get to a wall in the living room to place the bookshelf there because all of the tubs are in the way. So for the last two weeks those tubs in my bedroom have remained where I temporarily put them. I think I'm just going to put them in the closet and deal with them in Spring. I am wondering how many tubs I might be able to stuff into that closet...…..

We hope each and every one of you have a wonderful Christmas and a fantastic New Year, next year! If you need anything from Ridgeline Farm, give a shout …. preferably by phone. 480-269-6663.

I have been offline without a computer since I moved on Nov 5th. Verizon came today - this is the 2nd time I've requested them to come fix my connection (first tech never showed up. He told the office that no one was home, which was not true at all. I was home all that day.), This second technician wasn't able to fix the connection even though he made a heroic effort. The technician finally left, after saying he would contact his supervisor for more help. I sat down at the computer and decided to see if any part of the internet might work for me. Gmail came right up. Hmmm. Then I tried getting onto Facebook. It came right up and I got on without any problems. So, even though the tech and I both thought it wasn't going to happen, it did. I called him to let him know that he hadn't failed afterall. The problem was more with Verizon's website than with the computer's internet connection. If there is a way to make an interactive website difficult, Verizon will not only find it, but will patent it and claim it all for themselves.
Today it snowed again. The air was too warm for it to stay around but it sure felt nice to see snow falling and know that I didn't have to go out driving in any of it. I love snow days when I can stay home and sip a hot mug of flavored coffee while watching snowflakes falling.
Christmas is just around the corner. I wistfully remember as a kid saying Merry Christmas to everyone I met when I walked down town. Whether I knew them or not was immaterial to me. Strangers would smile and wish the same right back to me. I want to hear more "Merry Christmas"'s being spread around this year. We have no idea what kind of a year many folks have experienced and sometimes a smile and a friendly greeting can lift someone's spirits in spite of what's been going on in other areas of their lives. :-)
Ridgeline Farm's products will put a smile on your own face, too. Just call 480-269-6663 and ask about what's available for this holiday season. One taste is all it will take to make you glad you put Ridgeline Farm products on your own holiday table this year. :-).

Today was my first day back at my old job, the one I had quit this past September. I was glad to be back but never expected the welcome I received from co-workers and department managers who never expected to see me again. Lots of hugs, big smiles, warm conversations, much laughter...etc. This is the first time in my whole life that I ever went back to a job I'd left. It made me feel as if I had come home.
This morning before heading out for work, I swung by the apartment complex and paid the new landlord the first months rent and received the keys to my new kingdom. Yesterday I got a moving company lined up to load, haul and unload for me. Good thing, too. If I had to load, haul and then unload, I'd be having an estate sale instead! I'm too old to play "moving man". :-)

So much wind lately! Usually the foliage lasts much longer than it is doing this year. Right now most of the trees here on the mountain are pretty bare. Still, autumn remains one of my favorite times of the year. It's such a relief after all of that buggy, muggy summer heat. Pumpkins are everywhere now and winter squashes are being sold in every grocery store around here.
Take advantage of all of the heirloom pumpkins and winter squashes you find in the stores and save their seeds instead of tossing them into the trash can. Heirloom means those seeds are not genetically modified. You can dry them out by placing them on a paper towel for a week or two, then wrap up that paper towel and it's seeds and place it into a plastic baggie. Put the baggie in your refrigerator 's vegetable crisper drawer and leave it through the winter. Plant your seeds next spring.
Thanksgiving will be here before you know it. If turkey is not your "thing", then contact Ridgeline Farm at 480-269-6663 and ask about the other types of meats they will have available.
Some great holiday meal ideas might be marinated or smoked roast pork, baked ham, Chicken Kiev. Using skinless, boneless chicken breasts, pound each one into a flattened shape. Stuff each flattened breast with regular stuffing... or a seafood stuffing.... or a favorite veggie. Carefully roll up, tucking the ends underneath. Use toothpicks to secure them well. Google Chicken Kiev for complete instructions. So easy to make! LOTS of recipes on the internet too!
You can also stuff your Chicken Kiev with drained, canned fruit such as peaches, apples, pears. If you like the idea of a savory fruit filling and not a sweet one, drain and rinse your canned fruit, then mince up an onion (for me, the bigger the better) and mix it into your canned fruit. Onions go great with this dish, especially when apples are used as the filling. You can season the chicken, stuff and bake it or you can season it, stuff, then carefully bread it with Panko crumbs before you bake it. If you choose not to bread it, then brush some melted butter on top of each rolled up breast and then season it. You can also place some slices/pieces of whatever fruit you are using as a filling, on top of the Chicken Kiev to help keep the tops moist if you choose not to use breading.
Some families skip the meat platter idea entirely and focus on homemade lasagna. Others add deviled eggs to their holiday menu. (just because summer is over doesn't mean you have to go without such a delicious side dish!) Don't you know, the very best eggs are those right from your local farm! Fresh and delicious eggs from happy, pasture-raised chickens. There's no way to go wrong with that. :-)
No matter what you choose to make for your holiday dinner, Ridgeline Farm can help you out with your menu ideas. The great thing is, you'll be buying from a local farm, which helps your neighbors as well as your community. Call: 480-269-6663. The folks at Ridgeline Farm will be happy to talk with you.

Sorry I haven't been writing much for the past few months. The house I've been renting for the last 5 years is being sold and I have to move. I've been looking since June for a place to move to that I could afford AND keep my cat.....but couldn't find one. So I finally made plans to join a family member way out in Nebraska. I packed up the entire house, got rid of many items and furniture that I don't need and didn't want to waste money on storing. HOWEVER...my finances unexpectedly picked up at the last minute, an apartment I really liked unexpectedly opened up and I am now staying in the local area after all!. I thought I was going to have to give up writing for Ridgeline Farm since I'd be so far away from them. So happy I am staying and able to keep writing! BEST OCTOBER EVER!!! :-)
