Here we go!! Starting to plant out! Corn, sunflowers, and butternut squash are seeded so far, too.

Things are slow going over here…. I work in 15 minute intervals, and this year, my motto is “done is better than nothing.” 😅 I am really just hoping that something grows this year. 🙏 (The ground is really compacted, and I don’t have access to enough manure or compost to do a nice deep bed. But everything I add this year is just nourishment for the next few years, so it’s not in vain!)

I ran out of materials that I bought for the full space I had marked off. The plan is to plant out the space that’s ready and then either purchase more materials or cover the remaining area in wood chips. I’ll update with more pictures when I finish!!

TIP: After transplanting, water well with a little bit of fish emulsion (the bucket of brown liquid). Stinks like crazy, but the plants love it, and it helps with the transition!

The sheep look so rough at this time of year! They are shedding their fleeces in earnest. Some of them shed in a systematic way. They might have the appearance of shaved sides and a wooly mohawk. While others literally look like an unwinding sweater, with strings of wool trailing behind them. 🤣

Pictured are three breeding rams. Van Gogh, our 3 year old foundation ram, is in the center. He produces BEAUTIFUL babies! Tesla, our 2 year old main breeding lamb from last fall, is left of Van Gogh. And the ram to the right is our 10 month old main breeder for this coming fall— thus far, unnamed! 😍

Here’s where we’re ending on the garden for this week. (Tomorrow is a special sabbath for Shavuot, and then of course the weekly sabbath.) I wasn’t able to work on it yesterday, so this represents 3 days of minutes stolen here and there. I definitely feel the work of building a garden a lot differently being so freshly postpartum…. It’s a good thing it’s a smaller garden than some of my past ones! 😅

I can’t wait to plant & start watering!! Usually, things really start to take off. The ground is pretty compressed in this area, though…. Not sure if I’m going to have the strength and energy to broadfork it this year…. But I figure any garden this year is a win! 😅

Our lamb meat is BACK IN STOCK!! 🙌😋😍

If you are considering raising katahdins and would like to try the meat, or if you’re just looking for some high quality local lamb, we’ve got the good stuff!! 😍 😋 Quantities are limited.

Katahdin lamb is more mild in flavor than what you’d typically purchase in the store. It’s truly delicious!! Store purchased lamb is usually from wool breeds, which produce lots of lanolin (wool oil), giving the meat an infamous game-y, greasy flavor. Katahdins are hair sheep, which means they naturally produce less lanolin. Our katahdins are also 100% grass fed, which means they are more lean compared to their grain feed counterparts, also contributing to the more mild flavor.

When you purchase lamb meat from us, you are purchasing a lamb that was born and raised here on the farm. We feed 100% grass and have never needed to use chemical dewormers, vaccinations, or medications on our lambs! Our lambs live their best life so that the nutrition they provide allows you to live your best life!

Message me to purchase!! ❤️—Raquel

The garden is underway now that the materials have been delivered and the rain has passed. This is where we’re ending today.

I measured out the garden area with tent stakes & twine— 30’x56’. Then, I used wood chips (thank you, Asplundh & my husband’s crew) to make 1 main walkway (3’ x 30’) & 1 minor walkway (1’ x 50’), and I used garden soil from Peak Landscaping in Sagle to make 1 garden bed (30” x 50’). (Everything is roughly 3” deep. I will be adding more material to the beds in the form of compost after the initial soil is distributed through the whole garden.)

Just a little bit every day will get it done! 💪

Meanwhile, I started more tomatoes plus tomatillos, basil, calendula, and dill at the beginning of May. Hoping it’s not too late for the tomatoes & tomatillos! I’ve not started them this late before.

I’m really itching to get the “big seeds” direct sown, too! I normally sow the sunflowers at the beginning of May, so those are “late.” But we’re just taking one step at a time. Doing what we can. I just keep reminding myself that when I first started gardening up here 11 years ago, my average last frost was June 13th! And we still grew things.

So it’s okay if i’m not getting things in until the end of May. It’ll all work out. *Thoughts of a North Idaho gardener* 😜
