The yearling are a week away from fertility testing, when they will be exposed to their age-mate heifer herd, all at once for 24 days. The resulting live calves will be paternity tested to find out which of bulls are capable of getting the job done. Early sexual maturity and the actual, real-world capability to conceive on first exposure is how we select for fertility, longevity and profitability, not with a microscope or a computer program.

Welcome Holt Creek Jerseys to Astoria Livestock! We are very excited to have our first producer of dairy cows on board. 🥛

✅Their mission is to produce cattle that make profit on pasture and bulls to make more of them. All of their dairy cows are raised on a bison ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills.

🐄Holt Creek Jerseys has been selectively breeding Grassfed, A2A2, Polled Jersey cattle for utility, fertility, and longevity for over 35 years!
🌱You can be sure their cattle are pasture-proven and 100% grain free. The animals live outdoors and have a forage and roughage diet. In the winter, cows receive stockpiled pasture, native grass hay, native baleage, and alfalfa.

TITLE: Nurse Cow SUCCESS! A2 Jersey Accepts Strange Calf

DESCRIPTION: A2 Jersey Nurse cow allows another calf that is not hers to nurse. Video shows calf-sharing nurse cow process, with explanation of why bull calves raised on cows make better breeding bulls later in life.

Calving season doesn’t have to be a sleep-deprived twilight zone of pulling calves, tubing colostrum, triage and treating problems. Over 30 years ago, I made a commitment to my future self to only use bulls for breeding that needed no assistance to be born, nursed their own colostrum within the first hour of life, and thrived in a grazing-only management system, out of mothers that did the same. Selecting for low-input livestock that make profit on pasture begins at birth. We raise cows that can do that and produce bulls to make more of them. for the future of grazing dairy in the real world.

This 22-month-old heifer delivered her first heifer calf at about 3:00, and a half hour later the calf was up and nursing. This type of newborn vigor is what we look for in a ranch dairy cow. Calf sired by our Leonidas-P bull, semen is available on our website.

Spring means calving season, and the girls are getting started. Several polled, A2A2 calves on the ground and off to a good start already!

2026 calving season is well underway here on the ranch! As always, our cows are expected to give birth, unassisted, on pasture and the calves are expected to be up and nursing colostrum on their own within the first hour, as this little heifer has demonstrated. Getting a good start in the real world is what enables our cows able to make profit on pasture wherever they go from here.

It’s National Nebraska Day! 🌾
It just so happens that a product we carry comes fresh from a Nebraska ranch - keep reading to learn more…

Clover Cove Ranch is located in the Sandhills of Southwest Holt County, Nebraska in the recharge zone of the pure waters of the Ogallala Aquifer. In this unique and fragile ecosystem, Ben Gotschall, Tammy Austin and their daughter Charlotte take care of a herd of American Bison in addition to their dairy herd, Holt Creek Jerseys, which Ben started as a young boy 36 years ago. They milk their cows seasonally, from April to December on a forage-based diet that consists mainly of rotationally grazing the ranch's native prairie pastures. In addition to producing grass-fed Ghee for local markets, Ben and Tammy sell bison meat as well as A2A2, Polled Grass-fed Jersey genetics and cattle. The ranch is Audubon certified, and takes great care to promote habitat for many species of wild birds. Clover Cove is home to abundant wildlife including migratory waterfowl, turkeys, whitetail and mule deer, coyotes, badgers and beavers. Clover Cove customers can take pride in purchasing these products, knowing that they are supporting the stewardship efforts of the Gotschall family to keep their corner of the Sandhills a wild, abundant and beautiful place for generations to come.
Some of the cows in the herd are sourced from The Woodruff Farm’s annual heifer sale. Because these animals are raised primarily on a forage-based diet, without being pushed with high-energy feeds, they transition smoothly into the ranch’s grazing system. This approach helps develop calm, gentle cows that thrive on pasture and consistently produce the high-quality milk that makes our products unique.
