Today we celebrate freedom. A time to honor the past, reflect on progress, and gather in joy ❤️ Juneteenth celebrations are often marked with red drinks, a tradition deeply rooted in Black history with origins in West African bissap and Jamaican sorrel. To this day, these hibiscus-based beverages are shared at community gatherings, family meals, and celebrations! Their bold red color honors the bloodshed and resilience of those who endured slavery before and after Emancipation; symbolizing strength, joy, and remembrance.

This week, our GM Rori Robinson mixed up a Juneteenth inspired cocktail using Caribbean Hibiscus Hint of Mint Sorrel Spirit. Founded in 2020 in New York at the onset of the pandemic, this brand offers a zero-proof alternative that is perfect both in a cocktail or on its own over ice. Come to the shop and pick up a bottle, or try their Original flavor if mint isn’t your thing!

🌺 Teranga Sour (New York Sour Riff)
Named after Teranga, the famous Senegalese cultural concept of grand hospitality, community, and welcoming guests.

2 oz non-alcoholic gin alternative (we used Abstinence Spirits Cape Floral)
0.75 oz YUZUCO yuzu juice
0.5 oz lavender syrup (we used Brown Girl Mixers Lavender Syrup)
1 egg white (optional; we skipped it for the vegans over here 😉 )
0.75 oz Caribbean Hibiscus Hint of Mint Sorrel Spirit

Add all ingredients except the sorrel spirit to a shaker tin with ice, and shake vigorously. If using egg white, “dry shake” ingredients without ice for about 15 seconds first, then shake again with ice. Strain ingredients into a rocks glass over fresh ice, and float the sorrel spirit on top. You can pour it out over the back of a bar spoon to help the float land a bit more softly. Garnish with fresh mint, dried hibiscus flowers, or citrus rounds.

Cheers, and Happy Juneteenth!
