Today, our hearts are heavy as we say goodbye to an absolute legend. 🕊️✨

Here at Unearthing Farm & Market, Dolly Parton’s boundless generosity, fierce spirit, and y'all means ALL attitude have always been a guiding light for us in our work serving the Atlanta community. She gave so much to the world—not just through her incredible music, but through her radical kindness, her advocacy for literacy, and her genuine love for people.

Her legacy is so deeply felt here that we even named one of our sweet resident goats in her honor. Dolly the goat (who naturally shares the pasture with her sister, Reba) will continue to carry her namesake’s spunky and bright spirit every day at the farm. 🐐❤️🎸

Swipe through to see the Queen of Country herself, along with a few photos of our girl Dolly. We’ll be playing her music a little louder today while we do our chores.
Rest in peace to a true icon. You will be so incredibly missed. 🦋

It's National Farmers Market Week! 🌻

Did you know about one-third of the food we eat depends directly or indirectly on honey bee pollination? In Georgia, honey bees are essential for many of our specialty crops, helping produce everything from blueberries and cucumbers, to watermelon and bell peppers. To make just one pound of honey, a honey bee colony has to collect nectar from roughly *2 million* flowers! 🐝

Behind every basket of fresh produce is a network of growers, pollinators, and ecosystems working together. 🫂 National Farmers Market Week celebrates those connections while recognizing the important role farmers markets play in supporting local growers, expanding access to fresh food, and creating spaces where communities can learn, gather, and thrive. 💚

Featured at this week's market: Butterhead (Bibb) Lettuce! 🥬

Ever wondered why it's called butterhead? Despite containing no butter, Bibb lettuce is known for its soft, velvety leaves, rich buttery texture, and mild sweetness. Named for Kentucky horticulturist John Bibb, who developed the variety in the 1860s, it's a delicious choice for fresh salads, wraps, and sandwiches.

Stop by this Saturday to also pick up: 🍉 Mini seedless watermelon,🍄 Oyster mushrooms, 🥒 Cucumbers,🌽 Yellow squash,🥒 Zucchini,🍠 Sweet potatoes, and🍅 Cherry tomatoes

Have you ever tried butterhead lettuce—or mustard greens, like the ones pictured? Tell us your favorite way to enjoy them in the comments! 🌱

📺✨ Keep an eye on CBS News this week! 👀

On Tuesday, CBS News reporter Rashad Williams stopped by Unearthing Farm & Market to speak with our Executive Director, Katie Kissel, and board member, Anjanette Little, about the lead remediation work happening at the farm and the exciting road ahead. 🌱

We're not sure exactly which day the story will air, but you can catch it during the 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM CBS News broadcasts sometime this week! 🎥 Be sure to tune in—and don't worry, we'll share the segment here once it's available.

🍂 As we count down to our Unearthing Unleaded Grand Reopening & Fundraiser on October 17, we're looking for sponsors who want to help make this celebration possible. It's a wonderful opportunity to support the next chapter of Unearthing while connecting your business or organization with a community-centered event celebrating healthy soil, local food, and Atlanta's resilience.

The farm is starting to look like itself again! 🌱

After months of remediation work, we're in the final stretch—spreading compost, preparing to seed cover crops, and getting the property ready for what's next. It's exciting to see everything coming together, and we're even more excited to welcome our community back onto the land.

Save the date for Unearthing Unleaded on Saturday, October 17, from 2–8 PM! Bring your garden gloves and shovels, and join us as we help prepare the farm for its next season. We can't wait to get our hands in the dirt with you. 🪱🌳🦋

🔪🍳 Some people grow food. Some people cook it. Spike helps make both possible.

A friend of the farm and a wealth of knowledge, Spike has spent years sharpening knives with care—using methods that are gentler on your blades than many industrial sharpeners, helping them stay sharper for longer.

Whether he's sharing a delicious meal or helping someone bring an old knife back to life, Spike's favorite part is simple: "I just like making people happy."

We're grateful to have Spike as part of the Unearthing community, sharing his time, his craft, and his kindness with everyone who stops by. 💚

🤝 Community Market Volunteers help welcome neighbors, assist vendors, set up and break down, and make fresh, local food more accessible.

🐐 Our Animal Handling & Care Seminar is a hands-on introduction to livestock care with Executive Director Katie Kissel. No experience needed—just bring your curiosity!

🌱 Did you know? Shopping at neighborhood markets helps shorten the food supply chain, reducing the distance food travels from farm to table while investing directly in local growers. And if you join our livestock seminar, you'll discover fun facts too—like how goats don't actually have top front teeth! Instead, they use a tough dental pad to chew their favorite leafy greens.

There's something special about a Saturday spent outdoors with fresh food, live music, and familiar faces.

Thank you to everyone who joined us this past weekend and supported our farmers, vendors, and local musicians. Every visit helps strengthen a community rooted in good food, meaningful connection, and care for one another.

We hope to see you at the next market! 🌻💚
