Old Fashioned Thursday: Episode 2 — The Post-Pool Pour

This summer, I’m visiting different bars, restaurants, lounges, rooftops, speakeasies, and neighborhood gems across metro Atlanta to see how each place approaches the Old Fashioned.

For Episode 2, I went to the rooftop at Retreat by The Gathering Spot for a post-pool pour.

The bartender called this one an Apple Pie Old Fashioned — a riff made with SirDavis whisky, Du Nord apple liqueur, and Fee Brothers orange bitters.

It was a different kind of Old Fashioned experience. Not the classic whiskey-sugar-bitters build, but a more seasonal interpretation. And that’s part of what makes this series interesting.

An Old Fashioned may be simple, but simple does not mean casual. It still has to be balanced. It still has to be thoughtful. And it still has to honor the whiskey.

Episode 2 reminded me that hospitality can show up in many forms — even in a relaxed rooftop setting after the pool.

Bourbon is the category — but the style tells the story.

Today on Mash Bill Monday, I’m starting a new series to help break down some of the bourbon styles and designations you’re most likely to see on the shelf.

We’ll talk about wheated bourbon, high-rye bourbon, single barrel, small batch, barrel proof, and more — because those words matter.

Some tell you about the mash bill. Some tell you about the proof or the barrel. Some tell you how the bourbon was selected. And some give you clues about what you might taste in the glass.

The goal is simple: helping you shop smarter, sip better, and understand the story that bottle is bringing to your glass.

The more you understand the bottle, the better you can choose your pour.

Day 54 | 6 Days to Retirement
60 Days. 60 Bottles. One Legacy.

Pour: 291 Colorado Whiskey Barrel Proof Single Barrel

Some chapters move you beyond the familiar.

For much of this series, I’ve highlighted bottles connected to the familiar whiskey landscapes of Kentucky and Tennessee. But today’s pour took me somewhere else — Colorado whiskey, barrel proof, single barrel, finished with Aspen wood staves.

That felt right for this point in the countdown.

With six days left until retirement, I’m not just preparing to leave federal service. I’m preparing to move beyond the familiar map — from working inside systems built by others to building something of my own through The Bourbon Goddess.

This next chapter is entrepreneurship, storytelling, hospitality, bourbon education, curated tastings, food pairings, and immersive bourbon experiences.

Pour: Buzzard’s Roost Double Oak Cigar Blend Bourbon Whiskey

Some things are made for the long finish.

That’s what this pour made me think about.

This one opens with caramel, darker molasses-like sweetness, and a subtle smoky feel. Then on the sip, the oak comes through clearly, balanced by spice and sweetness in a way that keeps it grounded. And what stays with you most is that lingering oak.

At 15 days from retirement, that feels fitting.

Because this chapter is not just about arriving at the finish line. It’s about how I finish. What lasts. What lingers. What kind of impression I leave behind..

That’s also the kind of energy I’m carrying into The Bourbon Goddess — intentional, memorable, and built to stay with people.
