It’s been a tough week. Few words can capture the shocking enormity of the loss felt by our friends and neighbors here in the region.
Our hearts go out to the people, homes, communities and small businesses affected by Hurricane Helene in so many ways, especially those in Western North Carolina. But we are also inspired by the resilience and sense of community displayed by those hit the hardest.
Unfortunately, we got word today that Georgia’s pecan country was hit especially hard, causing significant damage to our state’s crop. We’ve been in touch with our growers and are learning that preliminary figures are indicating a loss of approximately 40 million pounds of pecans in the region.
Five of the growers within the co-op we work with experienced a total crop loss, with more than 80% of their trees destroyed.
This devastating impact on our suppliers – compounded with the devastation from Hurricane Michael in 2018 – will affect our state’s pecan production for the next several years.
We remain committed as ever to local sourcing and supporting our Georgia growers. We will know more about how this affects our supply in the coming months.
For now, we are grateful for this community and for your help in ensuring we can continue to support them now and well into the future.
