Hello there and thank you for visiting my page. I am first and foremost a wife and a mother and then I would say I am a hobby chicken momma. My husband, Justin, and I grew up about 20 miles from where our roots are now planted in Randolph, Ohio. We own about 10 acres and have two family dogs, a mastiff and a Boston terrier. About three years ago we were at our favorite home improvement store and word had it they were going to get baby chicks soon and it all went downhill from there to say the least. Then came a lot of reading on my end and a lot of hammering on my husbands end. We started our flock of hens with old faithful breeds of Barred Rock and Rhode Island Reds.
Watching the birds grow and seeing they each have a personality of their own was fun. My daughters named the birds and we had Dinner, Teriyaki, Honey (mustard) BB(Q), Orange, Siracha, Patty and Nugget. Those names quickly fell by the wayside, except for Dinner, and that's because she was and still is a pain in my side.
Last year we adopted Speckled Sussex chick and what I was told were Black Marans. I think to this day I was sold black hens that are anything but Marans and nothing short of spastic. Out of the two years and chickens we have only lost 3. One was a Maran who sadly passed away at only three days old and the other two that we lost were our RIR that tried to cross the road--- insert joke here.
This year we adopted the long sought after Easter Eggers (and one New Hampshire Red for my red headed nephew who has named his hen Apple). We are so egg-cited to add tinted layers to our brown egg laying flock.
