Sometimes it just takes patience and trusting the process! 🦌🏹

Dennis came to XTREME HUNTS for the opening week of Illinois deer season having never harvested a deer before and with only a little bowhunting experience. On Day 3, he checked the first box with his first-ever deer — a doe with the crossbow.

But the best was still to come.

We knew we had multiple great bucks showing consistent daylight activity, but the conditions needed to be right before making our move. Dennis trusted his guide, stayed patient, and waited until Day 4 of his 5-day hunt to move into the stand.

Last night, it all came together.
After watching this buck bedded in the milo and later feeding through the clover, he eventually worked his way toward the water trough and gave Dennis a 25-yard quartering-away shot. He made it count. The buck went roughly 100 yards and piled up just out of sight.
An absolute HAMMER for his first buck ever!

This hunt is a great reminder that success doesn’t always happen on Day 1. Trust your guides, trust the plan, and have patience. Sometimes everything just needs time to align.

Thank you, Dennis, for trusting XTREME HUNTS and me with your first guided hunt. He’s already rebooked for deer next year AND booked a turkey hunt for this spring… I think it’s safe to say he’s got the itch now!

One of our favorite ways to improve soil health and wildlife forage is drilling cereal grains directly into established white clover plots.

By eliminating unnecessary discing and tillage, these plots are able to retain more moisture, reduce runoff and erosion, build organic matter, and maintain a diverse mix of plant species for wildlife.

When soil compaction becomes a concern, we can incorporate brassicas and other deep-rooted species to help break up compacted soil naturally while adding another high-quality food source.

This same no-till approach isn't limited to fall. In the spring, we can drill crops such as buckwheat directly into existing plots, keeping living roots in the soil and continuing the cycle.

Our goal isn't just to grow a food plot for one hunting season—it's to build healthier soil and better wildlife habitat year after year.

Reclaiming habitat, one acre at a time.

We recently restored a portion of a CRP field that had been overtaken by Amur corktree, autumn olive, and volunteer pines. By removing these invasives, native grasses and forbs can once again thrive and provide quality wildlife habitat.

The job isn't finished yet—we'll be back for follow-up treatments to ensure these invasives stay gone.

Spent the day on a new client’s farm in southern Illinois and it was great seeing the amount of work this landowner has already put into improving his property.

From pollinator plantings along waterways, ag fields, and driveway buffer strips, it’s clear he cares about creating quality habitat and improving the overall health of his farm. We always enjoy working with landowners who are passionate about making their property better year after year.

Even with all the progress already made, bush honeysuckle is still trying to reclaim areas of the timber — which is something we see all across the Midwest. That’s where we come in. Habitat improvement is a long-term process, and building relationships with landowners over the years allows us to continue improving farms one project at a time.

A great habitat project doesn’t have to be on hundreds of acres—even 6 acres can make a huge difference.

This landowner had nearly 6 acres of timber behind his home inside the city limits, bordering city property, and it was heavily overrun with bush honeysuckle, privet, and autumn olive. After years of trying to fight it back himself, we stepped in during January 2025 and cleared the woods with chainsaw work and herbicide treatments on all invasives.

In summer 2025, we followed up with another round of glyphosate treatment on the honeysuckle. Last week, we planted 75 hardwood trees and 25 dogwoods, while the homeowner added 50 more native shrubs himself.

We had hoped to complete a prescribed burn before planting, but conditions didn’t allow it, so we’ll be burning these woods in early 2027—and the results should be incredible. We’re already seeing great native response with pokeweed, ragweed, beggar’s lice, goldenrod, and more coming back strong.

Restoring native habitat takes time, but the results are worth it. If your property is overrun with invasives and you’re ready to make it better, let’s talk.
