Here are some pictures showing the difference in the 2 Grays we took in on Wednesday that were nearly dead when they arrived for rehab. And then pictured this morning after they had their formula.

Big difference!!

They have been getting round the clock care With electrolyte replacement, formula, antibiotics for pneumonia and their wounds, manual treatment for fly strike. Many sleepless nights for Farmer Shel with alarms set for the middle of the night to feed and care.

Here is a little video of how we are still dealing with fly strike on the 2 grays that came in on Wednesday.
They are doing remarkably well, considering the condition they came in to the rehab in.

If you didn't Google it, the other day, fly strike is when a weakened and vulnerable animal is attacked by flies and eggs are laid deep in their fur. And if those eggs hatch the maggots then feed on the flesh of the living animal and will continue to feed off of it when the animal dies of those wounds. In this case, these squirrels had been without their mother for so many days. They were so malnourished and dehydrated they couldn't fight off the flies.
Thankfully, after handpicking all of the eggs off like this for the last three days, none of them hatched, and these two squirrels are doing very well. Their eyes actually opened today, they are on full dose formula, and are progressing well.

Wanted NOTHING to do with it when we had minutes to get him in there Wednesday night and get them all to the basement when the tornado sirens were going off, but now casually sits in there. 🤨

Thursday Night Update on the baby grays.

They are hanging on! They have such a will to live. I'm throwing everything I have at them. They're getting alternating treatments of electrolytes and formula, antibiotics for pneumonia, topical treatment for fly strike, pain med for their injuries. I sat and hand picked more fly eggs off the severe one tonight.
They are showing positive signs. Each has gained a bit of weight and is making urine which are fantastic steps. They're not out of the woods yet, but I am doing everything I can for them!

Thursday morning update

Radar confirmed a tornado last night, prompting the tornado warning, but as of right now, nothing touched down in our area that I'm aware of, thank the Lord above.

We did have to temporarily evacuate some animals last night due to flooding, but as of this morning, everybody is back where they belong and the water is receding. Miraculously we never lost power.

I had been watching the forecasts all day, but honestly I had gotten to the point of a little bit of the boy who cried Wolf, because there have been so many recent episodes where it was calling for severe weather and we got nothing. Yes, I do realize it's spotty and that everyone is affected. So I wasn't as prepared as id like to have been. We had just sat down to dinner when all of the phones went off with the emergency alert system. So we pushed back from the table left our plates, ran upstairs to gather all the cats, get them in carriers, and get to the basement with them and the dog and we sat there for about a half an hour or so and prayed for the safety of the other animals. And we listened. And we waited. As soon as the tornado warning expired, we went outside to check on the rest of the animals.
Here is Gemini who thankfully doesn't hold a grudge because we had to pull him out from under a staircase, in a not so pleasant way for his safety.

MIDNIGHT UPDATE

The flooding has worsened in some areas. We got close to 2 inches of rain today. Pistachio 's enclosure had too much flooding for me to be able to lay my head down to sleep tonight so I moved him to the sheep barn for the night. It's a little too chilly in there for him right now, but being dry is more important. He should be ok for a few hours. We don't have electricity in that barn so I can't put a heat lamp on him.
Everyone else is OK. We were lucky . I'm just tired!
